Easiest would be to take the lock cylinder from the seat lock to a locksmith and get a new one made.

Don't bother unbolting the cylinder from the triple trees, that's a pia. Just pop the seat off and get the cylinder that attaches to that tail fairing and take it to an old mom'n'pop lock shop. They won't even care if it's off a bike, cutting a new one is simple.

KAWASAKI Motorcycle and ATV Keys CUT TO YOUR NUMBER or CODE Ignition Switch

https://www.ebay.com/itm/11207705335...cAAOSwBahU3Pv6

key # should be on (or near) the backside of helmet lock, and if successful @ $16.99, both ignition and helmet lock will still match up

ALWAYS have spares on hand! After key is confirmed working, have more made up!

You need software to convert key-code to cut codes for machine and many places don't have it. Surprisingly dealers don't have it either!

One sure way is send code to:

Hillbilly Cycles in West Virginia
https://www.facebook.com/hillbillycycle/

Excellent customer service and you'll get brand-new key in less than week. They've even sent keys to Ninjette members in Canada!

After I got master key made, I ordered new-gen style bigger key blank and walked up to SF Chinatown for lunch and had it copied for $1.09. Critical step is to tell them to cut key from shoulder down so length will be correct. Some of these blanks are 1-2mm too long.

Did one key work everywhere before? I suspect locksmitb didn't do it properly.

Give Hillbilly a try. Still cheaper than new ignition.

I believe the helmet lock has fewer pins, much like the valet key that was included with my 2011 Toyota Corolla. The valet key doesn’t have the teeth needed to open the glove box… or trunk if I lock it (half turn the opposite way after closing). This keeps a valet or other guest driver out of your personal stuff when handing the key over for them to park your car or temporarily drive it somewhere.

If the helmet lock is made similarly then I would not expect that key to work with the ignition. Perhaps the extra teeth can be cut into it according to the key code so that these keys are not wasted.

I assume he just gave locksmith 4-digit Z---- code from helmet lock. With proper software, it would spit out cut-codes for machine. But if he gave locksmith helmet lock and guy tried to reverse-engineer a key for that lock, not so good... Also note that pregen '88-94 uses different key-blank than '95-07 models. Earlier blanks for '88-94 will NOT work on '95-07 bikes. While '95-07 blanks are backwards-compatible and will work for all pregens '88-07. If locksmith asks you if you've got early or late pre-gen, then you know they've got experience with these bikes. If not, look elsewhere.

Find better locksmith, I used Pop-A-Lock Locksmith Bay Area in Oakland and just gave them key-code over phone. Picked up key on way back from work next day (they used proper JMA blank too! picture above). It worked perfectly in my pre-gen's ignition, tank and helmet-lock!

I had that problem with a ignition key once..... I cured the problem by taking the tumblers out completely and putting it back together my honda 305 key would then fit the honda 90 LOL.....
that's a bit drastic though.... back in those days we didn't worry about theft.
a bloody toggle switch would have worked and been faster to do
...HAHAHAHAH
Bob.......

I concur I had a similar problem and wound up finding a lock smith that does motorcycles. I am now restoring my whole motorcycle because I decided to take the triple clamp off.

I too can make keys for the Kawasakis and many other brands by the key code number.
Also from a picture of the key some times.
Have made keys to motorcycles using special tools as well.
I'm a locksmith.

The Z series Kawasaki codes do have two series in the computer; old and new.
Most of the key cuts (bittings) are the same in the old and new series, but some are different for the same Z number. Not sure when the switch over from old to new occured.

Best to email me if you want some information on cutting a key.

Thanks for info Bob!

I suspect switchover in codes occured in 1995+ generation change with change in key-blanks.

I was able to go to a general locksmith that cut out a brand new master key from my ignition when I brought the bike to them. My existing keys were too worn to be making extra copies from and the helmet lock code didn't create a working key. They even had the appropriate ilco key blanks on hand. It was surprisingly cheap too. I didn't realize what a gem of a locksmith that was until seeing people having issues getting a locksmith willing to deal with a bike cuz they didn't even specialize in bikes or anything!
