Electronic Airbag Technology - The Future Is Here

Airbag technology is the next frontier in motorcycle safety. We take a look at the leading systems from Alpinestars and Dainese. For the past decade, both Alpinestars and Dainese have been toiling away trying to come up with just that revolutionary breakthrough that'll change the way we look at leather suit protection. That solution? Airbags. Or electronic airbags to be exact. The idea for airbag technology is nothing new, but the challenge came down to packaging, activation, weight and cost. Both companies have taken different paths (though with many similarities) to solve this issue, but never was a tethered system considered. Mainly because a tether system doesn't allow the rider (or racer, especially) to be independent from the motorcycle. Nor does it allow multiple inflations of the airbag. Electronic airbags are integrated so seamlessly into the rider's leathers that they are now able to ride uninhibited, and in some cases, can even sustain a second tumble. While their current airbag technology is reserved for racing applications, both companies are certain they have a system now that will see its way to the general consumer market within the next three years. Read on to see what the future holds.
