Cool New member with a scrapyard project

Okay, so at the moment I am completely disassembling my Ninja EX250F from 2007. When I bought the bike it was in pretty decent shape and the actual engine looked fine to me when I removed the top-end assembly.

But the transmission was "supposedly" broken. I was not able to take a look inside the transmission or check any of the gears since I had to remove it completely from the frame.
So I bought it and took it home and did just that.

Now it's in total pieces and I got to say I wish I had started it up (I don't have the ignition key) to see if it really was having a hard time shifting into 2nd and onward. However, the further I get into this disassembly the more I realize that it could actually be just fine.

I'm waiting on a flywheel removal tool before I can actually split the case and take a look, here are some pictures before and after.

*Note that I am just now learning how to actually work on motorcycles and im always trying to learn. So I was going to tear this thing apart anyway so if there are any sites y'all recommend that have parts I can use to refurbish this lmk. Or if you have experience working on these I could always use pointers.

edit: please send items I should buy to upgrade this thing after I get it running. Or parts I should replace considering it has 30,000 miles.

Greetings & Salutations!!

Look up Kawasaki's "positive neutral finder" feature. It's designed to make getting into neutral easier when you come to stop. Basically it's designed to prevent going into 2nd gear when bike is stopped. Can only get into 2nd when rear wheel is spinning.

Many people have been fooled into thinking transmission is broken because it doesn't appear to want to shift to 2nd. That's perfectly normal. Just have to get above 5-10mph in 1st gear, then shift to 2nd will work fine.

Well, I am going to replace the ball bearings on the fourth gear where the positive neutral finder is. The last owner dropped the bike nearly +10 times so I am just going to see if they are crushed or not. Rolling it and shifting was pretty rough into 2nd but maybe I wasn't going fast enough .

I'll be posting more throughout the month in terms of progress updates since I am genuinely serious about getting this thing running.

ah... here's video of guy tearing his transmission apart to "fix" shifting into 2nd "problem" where he discovers the neutral-finder feature:

Link to original page on YouTube.

Some hilarious quotes:

Quote:
"Should I disassemble it [engine]... Sigh...
For that reason, I took it out and brought it to the living room."
Quote:
"The living room became a mess, so I moved to another place."

Are you kidding?? This looks awesome!

Been meaning to find something along the lines of complete engine rebuilds but I never thought to look for non-English videos.

Thanks so much for the content!

It would be fun to tear into one of these but low mileage replacement pregen motors are plentiful and relatively cheap.

Actually, you would definitely be right on that! I have enough cash on hand to actually buy a whole new motor/transmission. But I am having a wail of a time breaking into it.

Although putting it back together might be a different story...

Still waiting on the alternator puller, so my adventure comes to a halt. Until Monday that is

I'd really like a go at one of these heads. I doubt Dremel offers flapper wheels small enough but just a basic deflash/smoothing of ports can't hurt and a good excuse give the valves a fresh lap anyways. Fun stuff to do while hanging out by the BBQ on a Saturday at any rate.
