Found the issue 😭

So i finally found a comp tester that came with a 10mm adapter and ran a comp test. 30ish on left. 0 on right. Tore the top end apart thinking maybe stuck rings or dirty/bent valves. Found a dime size whole in the top of the right piston. Big crack in the left right in the middle. PO must have installed the wrong plugs and damaged they made contact with the piston. No freaking clue how i was able to ride it for 3 days unless the piece worked its way out while i was riding 🤔 either way its gonna need a top end rebuild or engine swap. Anything i should do differently than say a top end rebuild on a car engine? I.e. flush crankcase, coolant system etc. (The broken piece of the piston is still attached to the underside of the piston and not in the crankcase thank god)

Fluids? For rebuild?

I like to use Yamabond-4 or Toyota FIPG on lower block. Coppercoat spray on headgasket.

My 2¢,

If it's hurt that bad, more damage is waiting if you split the case.

Better off getting another engine, trust me. You'll hopefully save money, aggravation, and time.

Rebuilding these engines is different from a car engine, and not worth it.

My PreGen engine went bad, a lot of bottom end noise, upon draining the oil, it looked like 70s metal flake paint, I didn't even bother going any further into it.

I just got another engine, granted it a complete Ninja 300 with wiring and ECMs etc...

As seen here https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=361054

I did find a running donor bike for $250 with only 11k miles. Unfortunately theres no telling how rough those miles were. Im leaning towards pulling the current engine and swapping then using this one as an experiment/learning experience. Maybe a big bore and play with porting/jetting 🤷*♂️

Here's FAQ on spark-plugs: https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Changi...rands_to_avoid

Unfortunately, someone put new-gen 08-12 plugs in your bike. Those have longer reach: https://www.summitracing.com/search/...s?fr=part-type

Never trust parts-countre muppets, always verify part-# and measurements yourself.

If only parts that contacted was piston tops, I would think just just that and maybe con-rod would be all that's needed.

Look up posts by Mohawk, Racer X, and Bruce71198, they've all built upgraded engines have have some good specs on parts.

Gonna split the case tomorrow and inspect further. Thankfully the part that broke is still attached to the pistons just pushed in. If everything checks out maybe ill roll the dice and just rebuild the top end with a good flush to get any debris out of the case

I'd say buy the parts bike, always good to have a donor bike, I have one and it comes in handy, trust me.

Pull the donor bike's engine, pop it in, so at least you have running bike.

Then you can do an autopsy on the dead engine. At the very least you gain the experience, and knowledge which is always a good thing.

Like I said if the top half is that bad, the bottom end isn't gonna be any better, if not worse.

I figure for $250 for a running bike is a steal anyways lol. Id be stupid not to buy it. Cant hurt to have all the extra wire harnesses and stuff JIC and a good engine to start fresh with lol

yeah, good deals pop up every once in while. If you have room to store, might as well get 'em. I got 2x pre-gens from storage-auction for $350 couple years ago. Put one complete bike together and sold off most of remaining parts. Ended up ahead for sure.

Any difference between a 1990 and a 1994 engine? I heard the timing and stuff is different but i would be using all my electronics from my 94. Basically just swapping the engine over to mine

'90 & '94 are same. It was '95 that got milder cams and less ignition advance

be careful with donor bikes, they may be worse than yours! Do compression-test and adjust valve-clearances while out of bike, much easier. I got engine that had zero compression. Turned out it was missing pistons & rods!

Im gonna comp test it before any cash is exchanged. Guy says he'll start for me before i buy it so i can hear it run. Gonna do valve adjustments and fluid changes before anything else. Appreciate the help bud 👍
