Rear seat cowl issue

I bought an aftermarket seat cowl for my 09. Go to put it on and the damn thing won't snap in! The grommet is real crappy and floppy and too big I guess and the push pegs won't stay in. It just barely seats and stays in. If I gently pull on it it will come off and it rattles around. Am I doing something wrong? Can I fix it somehow? Can't return it because I already painted it. Can I secure it some other way?

Mine is the same - but I'm actually missing the grommet at the back to hold the locating pin in place. I will be putting another grommet in soon to see if it holds it. In the near future I plan on mimicking something similar to a bonnet latch on a smaller scale to lock the back in place. Should be relatively easy if I can find the right latch.

You could try taping the cowl down overnight to see if it wears the grommet in so it will seat better - but mine with no grommet is at least flush with the bike. The rubber stops keeps it off the bike paint. But I can lift it an inch or so before the lock at the front stops it - and it's worn the rear locating pin, being able to move while riding...

They don't fit as snug as a bug in a rug, I modified mine. If you look at the pillion cowl your notice they actually go under that center bar instead. That is how I changed mine to do.

Go get the OEM grommet... Will solve you tolerances problems and the seat cowl will stay put.

Assuming your aftermarket seat cowl has the right OEM dimensions. If it's out of tolerances, you might be in for a try to find the right dimensions grommet.

If you take it for a ride will the seat cowl come free of the grommet by itself?

I actually took the piece off of the rear seat that locks down and put it on the cowl,and it snapped right in lol. I think it just wasn't long enough on the original piece. It's still floppy in the back because the grommet isn't snug but I don't think it'll fly off now at least.

My grommet kept getting pushed out, fit snug and all. Eventually I lost it and decided I'd just modify it to be a better fit and not have to keep dealing with the grommet itself.

Can you show me or explain how you modified the rear peg to get it to fit? I was thinking about just switching a grommet from the tail fairing since they also have screws that hold them on

I removed that peg, and put a thin C sectional where the peg was so it slides under the cross bar (similar to how it fits on the passenger cowl).

I actually had the same idea this afternoon!
Figured it would be easier than a latch mech as I first planned.

See attached images. I used what I had laying around, so the c channel is actually a bent piece of licence plate I cut off. Your want to use something that is strong and can give a bit. Its not professional looking but it does the job and the cowl fits and stays every time.

I wrapped electrical tape around my peg to get a a tighter fit. I also added velcro to help keep the backend down. Highway tested yesterday and no issues.
