Rear brakes - pad replacement

Time for new brake pads on the 08 250. Front looks very easy. The rear caliper looks like muffler must be removed. Not obvious looking at it as to how to remove the muffler. Would appreciate some advice before I do the job. Thanks, Bill

I'm pretty sure you can do it without removing the muffler, just need a longer extension on an allen wrench to loosen the caliper mounting bolts. Might be able to get some more clearance by just removing the bolt attaching the muffler mount up to the passenger peg area, so the end can is able to move slightly.

You can get a hex key in there to loosen the pins & take the caliper off without removing the exhaust, I found with a ratchet, extension & hex bit the job was easy enough.

This is actually depends on the kind of exhaust you have. If it is stock, you can get by without removing it. Some aftermarket exhausts make it impossible, such as the HMF Exhaust.
I don't know what you have, so I'll tell you what I did.

-Loosen all the connections your muffler has to the bike, and loosen the t-bolt clamp.
-Use lubricant or general purpose oil around where the muffler attaches to the actual exhaust pipe. *Make sure the bike is COLD before doing so*
-If you can't work the muffler off with some elbow grease and your bare hands, read the following.

-Take a cloth or towel and hold it under the base of the muffler.
-Now take a hammer and bang it loose. The towel/cloth is there to prevent denting or damage to your muffler.

Now, like others have said, if it's stock, you don't need to remove it, you can use extensions to get around it. If you have aftermarket and it proves problematic just follow the above.

I have a knee problem for the moment which prevents me from laying down or stooping to see the pins. Are they acessed from the left side of the bike thru the wheel? If so your post is now very clear to me.

I think you can do everything from the right side of the bike; no need to go through the wheel.

2 pins at the top hold the pads, the 2 bolts below hold the caliper to the bike, loosen the top 2 first, & re mount it before torquing them.

The brake line usually covers the lower bolts.
