K&N Pod filter

I've recently removed the air box from my race bike (wow, so much room to move around in now!), but installing the K&N pod filter (oval shaped with two intake ports that match the stock carb pretty well) has me a wondering if the lack of support the carb now has--since the air box is gone--could be a problem. Its pretty much just hanging on the rubber intake runners as it sits now. That doesn't seem ideal. Any thoughts out there? I can pretty easily put some zip ties here and there to help support it, but that will look a little tacky, to say the least. And I am not sure that will be sufficient. Hate for the thing to fall off mid race! Thanks.

I zip tied my to the frame and it pulled them off of the motor. I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start and everyone laughed at me. I didn't zip tie the filter to anything and it stayed on for over 14,000 miles.

I safety wired mine to a hard part on the carb...

I was not comfortable with the pods just hanging there at all.

Will post a picture later.

Quite a few members have used zipties (or something similar) to secure their carbs and/or pod filter to the frame. Same reasoning as you.

If it makes you feel better, go for it. If you don't want to worry about it, it's not necessary. 6000+ miles on mine with the carbs/filter just dangling and no problems yet.

Thanks for the quick responses. Not sure how I will proceed, but good to know others have had the same thoughts. I can see how zip ties could pull the filter off, but leaving it hanging on the rubber intake tubes concerns me, too. Will probably try both approaches and see how things go. Thanks again.

I thought some race orgs required the stock airbox in place?

Some race orgs in our (Mike and I) area have a "gentleman's" ruleset. It's basically, supersport rules or "as long as your not cheating to bad". lol

The airbox is not on that list, so I would assume it can be changed as pods can be attached to a stock carb body. Am I missing something?

Will do, thanks for the heads up. Since I plan on doing the races, I should keep up with things.

Midwest Cafe Racing Association (MCRA) allows removal of the air box this year. So does the CMRA (Texas based organization). Not sure about WERA. As was said, some outfits allow it, some don't. Sure does free up a lot of space and make things easier to get to!
