And here I just put a screwdriver in between the chain and rear sprocket and call it a day. But hey, if you want to spend some money and add a medium sized, single-purpose tool to your toolbox, knock yourself out.

About 2min in, this shows *kinda* the method I use. Rolled back further, the screwdriver will very reliably set you up with around 1-1.5" of slack with no weight on the bike. Spec for the Ninja 300 is 0.8-1.2". Race/track types will typically run it a tad looser.
