Hailstone damaged plane

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news...ugh-hail-storm
This made the news and indeed the damage is staggering. What is puzzling me is how the engines survived this? We know that bird ingestion is a major problem with jet engines yet they survived the baseball sized hailstones that trashed the nose of the plane.
Any aviation enthusiasts here shed any light?

They may have to replace the outer turbine fans. These things are made up of a multitude of fans before the combustion chamber. Either way it's going to be a pricey repair.

Large aircraft are certified to be able to keep flying after impacting a 4-pound bird.

just, wow. I wouldn't call that windshield damage, I'd call that destruction.

how the crap did they land the plane? You can't SEE!!!!

only one that tops that is the pilot that landed with the front gear not fully deployed (down and locked)

How about trying it with only one wing?

I would imagine any ingested hail was quickly reduced in size due to high temps inside the engine compressor stages. As DEFY noted, they would have to pass through the outer compressors intact, but by the time they got inside, may already have been water vapor/steam. (Not healthy but not catastrophic)

Damage to the compressor blades would most likely be limited to nicks and dent. The hail, although big, do not have a large enough mass to affect the blades. No damage to the turbine section should be found. Engines are designed to be able to ingest high volumes of water with no effect. It came out the back as a sort of fog/mist/vapor.

The biggest costs incurred would be the windshields, weather radar, nose radome, and the sheet metal inspections and/or repairs required throughout the whole aircraft. If you factor in everything, sheet metal is the highest costs. The RVSM (Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum) section of the fuselage, which is right next to and below the windshields, will be thoroughly inspected. The mechanic' labor involved, the required paperwork and documentation, the engineers' labor and time to cut an EC/RA (Engineering Change/Request Authorization) to approve a non-standardized repair, and the actual repair carried out, followed by an inspector to verify the work is done in accordance with the EC/RA. Structural repairs are RII (Required Inspection Items). There are also many other unforeseeable expenses that I can only imagine. Maybe a couple of antennas, damages in the cockpit, pitot tubes, some landing and/or taxi lights, etc etc.
