Wiring Noob Question
Whats up guys I ordered an aftermarket 7 inch headlight because my fairings are shot and am in the process of making it a streetfighter (the stock rectangle headlight looks goofy to me)
How do I go about this- basically the stock headlight is 3 pronged, and basically plug and play to the 3 prong plastic clip. The aftermarket circular one has wires and not the connector. What’s needed to make it fit? No experience in electrical stuff but this shouldn't be too difficult to figure out one someone explains it. Added some pics so you can better understand due to my lack of electronics vocabulary— pic 1 - the prong on stock headlight pic 2 - the clip that goes to the stock headlight pic 3 - no clip, just wires. |

You need a male h4 plug. Then just test the wires to make sure the right ones match up and the right lights come on, then solder the connections and wrap it up. I would get the kind that comes without being pinned into the connector yet, but 9003/H4 should do.

Should be: Red/Yellow = Low Beam, Red/Black = High Beam & Black/Yellow = Ground.
If you are never going back you could just cut the wire and crimp on bullet connectors to match your new headlight.

That is strange light, does it have replaceable bulb? Take off rear cover and you may find H4 bulb that factory plug will connect to directly.
Male H4 connector at back of light is best solution. You can connect snd disconnect just one connector quickly without worrying about which wire goes where. This is high-power connection. You’ll want to solder AND heat-shrink wrap male H4 connector onto that light with butt-splic. This then plugs directly into factory connector. Generally gets you +10-25% more lumens out of bulb and ensures same performance for decades when done this way. https://www.ebay.com/itm/174013713829 Cut off any connectors from back of light and butt-splice male H4 pigtail from ebay sbove on. Be sure to slide section of heat-shrink tubing on before joining wire-ends. You want joint with: 1. Mechanical strength, hence using lineman splice 2. Highly conductive, requires soldering 3. Durable and long-lasting, thus corrosion resistant heat-shrink tubing over joint. It’s done this way in pro-motorsports like F1, military and aerospace applicstions for performance, reliability and longevity. |

Even better as Ben mentioned is to use male H4 terminal kit:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/191893482825 Best to crimp, solder AND heat-shrink wrap those terminals onto headlight wiring. Then be sure you have correct wire before inserting terminal into connector. Can be difficult to extract to put into different location without damage. Even for simple jumper, I’ll do it the NASA way. |
