My first police experience

After 1 year of riding and 7,000 miles later I finally got pulled over this morning. I was going the speed limit until I found myself stuck between two semi's on the interstate. I punched it to get around them since I have had bad experiences with semi's in the past. As I got around the Semi's and pulled ahead of them I see the cop on the side of the road pointing his radar at me. Looked down at my gauge and see that I am doing 80 mph.....crap. I Don't even wait for him to come up behind me to pull over. He says he got me doing 82, explained to him about the semi's and he looked at my license then let me off with a verbal warning! Can't believe my luck, I was doing 22 over the speed limit and didn't even get a written warning. Will be buying a lottery ticket on the way home.

He was one of the nicest cops I have come across. I have learned that if you don't argue with them and say, yes sir, no sir, your experience will be a whole lot better

I had a similar experience. After having my bike for only 2 months I got pulled over on the highway. I was in traffic though right in the middle and he pulled me over. Said he clocked me going 82 in the 70 zone... He chatted with me about bikes and being careful. He never even asked for my license. I think he just wanted to check out the bike. Super nice for a state trooper. Usually in VA they NEVER let you off.

Attitude is everything and it probably helped too that you explained why you bolted around semis. Safety is priority, especially on bikes. Glad you found a LEO who agreed.

Can I clam the time I had a state trooper pull in behind me at my work to give me a hard time as being pulled over?

I've been saying this from the beginning. If you don't act like a jerk for a nutcase, you're very likely to get a warning. Just stopping on a sport bike makes you an exception.

I've always received warnings. I don't kiss their arse by saying yes sir or no sir or other hogwash nor do I pull over early. They want me then they can get me which I've gotten away in the past (not bragging but it is what it is). I just say yes and no. Throw some logic at them and if they have a modicum of intelligence then they would let me off and they do. Good that you did get away. Riding between two semis for an extended period of time is not ideal.

he got a warning because he a had a valid reason for speeding (passing dangerous/slow trucks quickly, in a vehicle more than capable of it) and immediately told a valid story that lined up with observations made by the officer already. he would practically have his case thrown out at arraignment if they could. any sane judge would throw out the ticket or reduce it to something pointless and the cop knows it. it would be a waste of time for everybody.
simply not being an asshole doesn't mean you won't get a ticket. being extremely nice and cracking some really funny one-liner jokes gets you a much better chance of not getting a ticket. telling a funny story about how your brother is a sheriff and would tase you when he was in training so now you're nervous about tasers will definitely help.

not getting pulled over in the first place guarantees you don't get a ticket.

I think he was also shocked that I actually have a valid motorcycle license as well. From what my MSF teacher said, only 30% of riders have actual license. He was an ex-CHiPs cop so I assume he knew what he was talking about. on a side note, the instructor was a bad ass with slow manuvers

Wow you guys must be lucky, the one ticket I ever got was a ticket plain and simple, no chance for a warning or anything. And yes, I was respectful. Granted it was during the time when they go out in force and have speed traps everywhere to get their quota... Still sucked. Two idiots going 55 in a 60 in the fast lane, guy next to me in a camry punches it and hauls off, I do the same thing, ohshitacop, ticket for 16mph over Probably didn't help I was only 16 at the time lol. I think the cop just thought I was hauling ass for the sake of it though... people blocking the fast lane is one of my pet peeves. I did get that ticket off my record though so oh well.

This holds true until you do 106 in a 55 on your ninjette

Nope, didn't help one bit. They like to 'teach' young drivers by writing tickets. My only ticket was just like yours. 17, and the cop was real hard@$$ with something cold and hard up his rear end. I debated reporting him for being rude, but I figured his job sucked and that would be his punishment because he clearly didn't complete college... The ticket never gets reported if you take traffic school.

i thought that for sure doing 82 in a 60 would have been a ticket at least, in colorado they can arrest you for doing 20+ over speed limit, although i haven't heard of anyone getting aressted for only 20 over, probably needs to be 30+ for that

that's not that bad honestly, i bet asshole cagers drive MUCH faster than that

I've done 85 on the same road (not your's) in my ninjette and not gotten pulled over before, just got a smile from the state trooper after i moved over and he passed me.

About the 106... well that was only $419 and no arrest/no points on license (you plead no contest if you just pay the ticket ) I did the same as you and was very respectful, if I didn't have an M i would've been in HUGE trouble

Like you said - (paraphrased) just don't be a dick and you're good lol
