How Screwed is this Tire?

Just want more opinions. I'm definitely changing it before the track, but want to commute on this tire before then. This is the best photo I have.

The only damage is what you see there. I know what I did wrong and as soon as i figured it out the tire basically slipped on... The metal band is not damaged but I'm worried...

no one can say for certain. Any respectable tire manufacture or shop would advise you to change it because they would not want to risk being held accountable if they told you, sure it is gtg then something does happen.

Now the real question is, will you trust what some stranger on the internet has to say, who will see no repercussions for what happens either way or do the smart thing?

I'd let it sit and see if it loses air over 2-3 days, if it doesn't it's probably good to go if it does then it's time for a new tire

I'd scrap it, if you were on fours I'd say give it a go... but not in this case.

I don't think it will hold air for long, I did that when installing a new tire on my VW and it would go flat every two days, fix a flat would help it hold a week maybe. If it does air up and hold, I don't see why you couldn't ride it, but I would risk it. A flat on a bike is super inconvenient. Not to mention it could lead to a crash if it losses pressure wile riding.

It would seem some people are implying that if a tire holds air while the motorcycle is sitting in your garage that also means it is capable of dealing with the added stress of riding

if it was the front tire i would say don't take the chance... but the rear?... what i would do is take a tire repair kit and take the rubber cement and smear it all between the bead and the rubber and clamp it down loosely then put it on and see if it leaks. if it doesn't, it's probably fine. but just remember theres a higher chance of it disintegrating mid-corner than a normal tire

if it doesn't then there's no chance that it will. if it does then you can try it and see if it holds air when riding, especially if you use a tire repair kit like alex.s suggested

You might be able to ride on that, and you might be able to take out your own appendix, too. Neither is worth the downside potential.

hard to see from the pic, but to me it looks like the bead is cut, if so, you need a new tire. don't try to ride on it.

Also, tires never go bad on a R6.......

Spray some soapy water around the seat of the tire where it meets the rim, the whole way around, and watch for bubbles to see if there's a leak.

Looks pretty screwed though. Better to have a $100 mistake than a crash.

I would have to agree with most of the posts above. $100 for a new tire is way cheaper the repairs and/or Drs bills. The decision comes down to: what risk are you willing to take?

So what did you do? Damage the metal bead? Or just damage the rubber around the bead? can't really tell tbh.

I'm not giving advice here. Liability and I'm not an authority on the subject. If it were me, I'd just replace it with a good tire and use that one as a place to put the tank when it's off for service. Or put it on a boat as a bumper, or something like that.

I did see the op... That's why I was asking for clarification. Your picture is all thumb. I know you said 'the metal band is not damaged' but I'm more interested in seeing it myself.

Just replace it and call it a learning experience
