just changed my oil in my bike. Pretty simple only thing that bothered me was the large O-ring doesn't lay flat because of it being jammed in the small oil filter box so i just had to kind of assume that it got seated correctly as it got screwed in.

No leaks though so all is well.

Question drain plug

Does the 2012 come from the factory with a magnetic oil drain plug? Is it wise to get one if not?

As long as you keep a close eye on it and stop riding if it drops at all.

It doesn't. Your choice. I had to complete my break in without one because the dealer didn't have the right size and my odometer jumped from 2 miles to over 680 miles the very next day.

Nice DIY, helped me do my own oil change today!

One problem I ran into, well one of a few, was that the small o-ring that came with the K&N filter would NOT fit with the base plate. I just could not get the plate to get over the o-ring and flush with the base of the center tube. This happened on both K&N filters I tried (the inner rubber seal of the first filter ripped in 2 when trying to press it on the center tube, yes everything was well coated with oil and was still too tight a fit). I chose to keep the old (~2500 miles) small o-ring on there, and it still clicked when I pressed the plate on, so I think the seal will be good.

Does anyone have advice for next time or know why the o-rings were so freakin tough?

I changed my oil for the first time last weekend using this DIY. Very helpful, thanks!

My filter from Napa only came with the large O-ring, so I re-used the small one. Also re-used the crush washer as they didn't have the right size, and no leaks.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead - but I had n00b question -

Just did my first oil change on my new-to-me Ninjette. I filled the oil level to just under the upper fill line in the sight glass - except I had it on the rear stand at the time.

Put it down completely on the ground and looked at it again - sight glass appears completely full. I'm assuming I overfilled it, right? Solution is to drain from the bottom again until the level comes back down (and check the level with both tires on the ground)?

Thanks!

Maybe overfilled it a tad. If it's that close, I wouldn't worry about it. The problem with that slight overfill is that now you can't see if you have a fuel leak into the oil sump.

I shoot for the middle of the sight glass for oil level.

If you're a masochist, you could snake a small diameter tygon tube (or whatever material, because it's only going to be in there for a few minutes) down the fill hole into the crankcase and siphon out a little oil. But I wouldn't worry about it: chalk it up to a noob learning experience.

Thanks!
When you changed the oil and filled it did you run the engine to warm and circulate the oil and fill the filter (assuming you changed the filter also)?

To properly check the level you should run the engine for a couple of minutes to warm and circulate the oil, then turn it off and wait 3 minutes to check the level. With the cycle completely level, check that the oil level is between the high and low marks, then top it off to just under the high mark. Being on the center stand shouldn't matter as long as the ground is level in both directions.

You need to keep and eye on the oil level because the Ninja will pump some oil into the airbox from the crankcase breather when running at high RPMs (like most of the time).

What oil did you use?

Thanks guys. I did try to go by the directions in the wiki and kept running the engine and topping off until I got to just under the full mark. It was only after I took it off the rear stand that the oil looked to be beyond the full line.

As for oil, I used synthetic Rotella T6, 5w-40.

I may drain a little bit of oil just to be safe. For what it's worth, it appeared that the previous owner had it overfilled as well. Sigh.

You could drain a bit out, but if it's pretty close you should be fine. Chances are you will lose a little over time.

Most likely the bike was not completely level either on the stand or off. If you have level ground the center stand it the easiest way to get a good look at the sight-glass.

T6 is a good choice for the Ninja IMO.
