Engine bogging down on start
Hi guys. When I am at low revs (below 4k RPMs), I feel the engine is bogging down. This is most usually the case when I first ride. After about 30 mins or so of driving, then it is not as bad. Sometimes at a stop, the lag is as much as 2-3 seconds. I have 200 miles so far and I do warm it up approximately 2 minutes before riding. Any suggestions?

Hey noob. Was this bogging happening when you bought the bike?

That is a good question. It might have been. I probably just couldn't feel it then as I am very inexperienced and I was not very smooth. Now that I am getting the hang of it, I am feeling more of the bike's intricacies...

I meant to ask also what year is your bike, and were you the first owner?

Is it happening when you start from a stop, or is it when you stop?

Hope you don't mind all the questions. They will lead to more solid advice.

Ok, we may be getting somewhere. Are you giving it a lot of throttle pretty quick or are you applying smooth, steady twist?

Ya, I was sheepish with the throttle at first also. So are you twisting quickly on it or building it up smoothly? And how are you at letting the clutch engage?

I let the clutch disengage smoothly. At this point, I am only on the gas but then I notice the engine bogging down, I apply more throttle, but then it just moves at the same rate, then all of a sudden after a second or two, I get a burst of torque.

Ya, I just talked to Plasmatoast. He says their is a deadspot in the low RPMs when the bike is cold. Try warming up longer, with tyhe choke on.

Truong. Thank you for all your help on this. I'll do that and keep an eye on this and will post again if it becomes a bigger issue. Thanks again bro!

Shimming the needles was outside the immediate scope of this troubleshoot. It is rational to improve upon basic technique (ie, longer warm-up period) before simply chalking it up to a supposed shortcoming in the machinery.

This is a perfect example of an engine that needs to have the needles shimmed! 30 minutes warmup is totally unacceptable! My bike was the same way and that was with the air temp at 70 degrees! The temp can be in the teens and I can drive away after 2 minutes of warmup.

when tapdiggy asked me about my bikes I thought he was asking about start up.. definitely need to do something if the bike acts like this for 30 minutes, Shimming the Needles is a good, quick, and relatively inexpensive place to start. Be very careful of the screws on the top of the carbs, and the rubber diaphragms that the needles are in.

Do you turn the choke off before riding it? I haven't done any mods on my bike and I haven't had too much trouble getting it warmed up quickly. I put the choke on and start it, then I gradually reduce choke to keep the RPM at about 2500, once it is settled with the choke at about half way (maybe 5 minutes), I start riding the bike and as it is moving I turn off the choke as I'm applying throttle. This works fine for me.
