Question What is the problem with my starter motor???

ARRGGGHHHH!!!! BEYOND FRUSTRATED

Yesterday, my son and I tried to push start the bike... It didn't work to well, but we did actually get it started...by pushing the starter button! Put new gas in...got it started...and my son rode it up and down the street till it died again! It actually turned over a couple of times and then suddenly... "click-click"...
FRUSTRATED, we pushed back into the driveway and managed to get a couple of turn overs but it didn't start up...

So, today I went out to try again...again it turned over a few times...then...
CLUNK-CLUNK as opposed to click-click... Turns over a couple more times...
CLUNK-CLUNK...rock the bike a bit...turns over again a few times...then ...
" CLUNK grind CLUNK click...click-click...rocked a few times...put in first...click-click... Back to neutral...click-click... click-click... and THAT is where we are at...again!!!

Click-click... Click-click... I am really starting to hate that sound...click-click!

??? ??? ???

Dead battery. Or bad battery connection.

Fully charge the battery, and check all connections. Also the starter solenoid might be going bad maybe. They go out without any warning.

Also when trying to push/bump start the bike get it rolling good, and shift into second gear, not first, makes it easier to start. The bike must be moving a bit to shift into second.

The battery is brand new and connected to a tender...actually the battery, solenoid, starter , and connections have been all been checked and rechecked...the only thing I haven't done is actually removed the starter to check/clean it.

How long did you pressed the start button before it clicks?

Brand new batteries can be and go bad. Voltage should be 12+ at rest and not go below 10 volts when you press the starter button. I would verify with a volt meter before I went after other parts.

Verify you're getting battery voltage at the starter motor when you press the start button also.

Okay let's deal with the clucking noise then,

Have you checked to make sure the carburetors aren't leaking into the cylinders? As in the float valves aren't stuck open/float height not set properly?

Pull the spark plugs and see if there wet with gas? Try cranking the engine without the plugs in, pay close attention to see if any large amounts of gas come out thru the open spark plug holes.

Is the petcock in working order? It's a vacuum activated petcock, so with no vacuum applied, and it set to ON or RES no gas should flow. Only when vacuum is applied to the petcock does gas flow in those two settings, obviously nothing flows anytime when it's set to OFF. You might also want to check the petcock for proper operation while your in the neighborhood.

1.Feb.2017 - UPDATE

So...basically...I am still FRUSTRATED...

I've finally started troubleshooting my starting issue (all I get is a Click-Click when I press the starter button) again after six months...been working on it off and on since last week...and basically have come up with a severely corroded STARTER RELAY TERMINAL...so...my next question is:

What is the best and easiest way to clean the corrosion...

I actually use Coca-Cola on my truck batteries...and it works pretty good (I can only imagine what it's doing to MY insides since I drink it like water...but I digressed)...but am a little cautious about using it on my bike...

So...what say y'all?

The best contact cleaner I've found is DeoxIT. They sell a D5 in a spray can that works extremely well, and other versions in bottles, etc.. Of course if you can get to the terminals, fine sandpaper should do the job, and a light coat of general purpose grease will help prevent moisture from getting back in to cause more corrosion in the future.

DeoxIT works great on potentiometers, like in guitar amp volume controls, relay contacts, and other places that are hard to get to.
