Lightbulb Fuel gauge acting really weird

On my ride today the fuel gauge started acting up. It seems to be stuck at past full (pressing against the top stopper pin) when standing still or on the kickstand, but when I am actually riding it comes back down to roughly the correct reading. I filled the tank up to see what difference it would make, but still have the same problem.

I know the fuel gauge is generally not overly accurate, but this is just strange. Does anyone have any idea why it would suddenly show a maximum reading all the time when not moving but then work correctly when in motion? I don't know if it's the gauge or the float/sender that would be causing it...

Edit: this is a 2008 250R

And are not backwards on the sender
