Is it possible I have this much mileage?

Hey everyone, beginner here. I got my 08' back a month or 2 ago off craigslist, and it was posted at 5,700 miles. When I went to see the bike, the odometer showed 5700.0. The last zero should be the tenths, so that makes the bike 5700 miles as posted.

Then, I filled out 5700 miles to register at DMV. The lady was like, "Wait a minute, something is wrong. You can't have 5700k if the title shows 47,000. It must be 57,000 miles." I was like, "Get the f outta here man. Let me see." I don't know what to say, all I can say is, I was too damn excited when I went to see the bike, I didn't match the title and the odometer.

Now, could it be the title that's wrong? I mean, the bike is 08', 57,000 miles in 4 years? That's a bit extreme no? Or, I'm just too damn dumb to realize this bike is the highest mileage bike ever?

I rode the bike and still riding the bike with no problems. I did the oil & filter change, rear brake pad, cleaned, lubed and adjusted the chain. I do not notice anything mechanically wrong wit this bike. If the title is wrong, is there any way I can change that? At first, I thought the odometer stopped working, but it's working just fine.

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

I would think that it was someone that didn't know how to read the odometer while transferring the title, thinking that the 1/10ths on it was another 0.

57k in 4 years is definitely plausible. There is a guy on another forum I am on that has a 04 I think cbr600 and he has over 200k on it lol

Since the odometer is working, I suspect it's incorrect on the title. But, then again, maybe the previous owner was a jerk off that he had stopped or changed the mileage on the odometer. People would do anything nowadays.

The only worries I have is maintenance. Just in case it is 57k, I pretty much need to do much more than oil change. Maybe that's gonna be my winter project.

Nemesis, how many miles you got on your ninjette?

Contact the seller and get a sworn notarized affidavit from him verifying the true mileage at the time of the sale. If the odometer and the seller are in agreement, the title is wrong and you should be able to fix it with DMV.

^+1 Our DMV also has a form where a police officer can come out verify the odometer reading for them. Had to do it once when I transferred a car from out of state. GL!

Really? How can a police officer verify if the odometer is correct or not? That's strange.

Is there an easy way I can check myself to see if it's 5k or 57k?

He's not there to prove it's accurate, he's only there to confirm its displayed mileage. I don't know of any definite way to tell its actual mileage.

Are you on original stock tires? Check the born-on date on the tires as well. Doubt you'll get much more than 10k miles on stock tires let alone 57k. I believe 08's were Dunlops?

08's were Dunlops. This method may get him a general idea but unfortunately he will need some type of agrumentative proof for the DMV.

Amended Odemeter Statement from the seller? Or just bringing it in to the DMV?

It seems the OP is more concerned to know the actual mileage of the bike. Since the odometer does read 5700, I can't imagine it'd be to difficult to get it corrected on the title. Simplest solution I thought was to just ask the seller.

They used both Dunlops and Bridgestone BT-45's in 2008. Mine had the BT-45's and the one sitting next to it in the showroom had the Dunlops.

57,000 miles, though plausible... Is unlikely. In NC, there is a statement/form on the Title to have the Odometer reading amended.

It is very possible to have over 50k on a 08 250 Ninja. I saw two of them personally a little over a month ago. Both of them Red too.

However in your case I would suspect your mileage to be more like 5,700.

I bought an '08 and put 16,000 kms on it in one year. I traded it in for an '09 and it has 38000 kms on it. Kilometers are pretty small units compared to miles, but in Ontario Canada, that represents only a few months of driving each year. A motorbike from the southern states could easily have been driven 57,000 miles in 4 years. Sounds like the previous owner could set you straight.

Either option is possible. You'll find stories of people who put tons of miles on their bikes (usually in warmer climes), and bikes that have nearly no mileage on them for how old they are (I bought my '09 EX500 barely-used in July '12 with only 44 miles on it).

Someone on EX-500.com was asking about why their speedometer was reading fine, but the odometer was way off. It completely blew my mind, but they didn't realize that it was showing tenths. Despite the fact that the main odometer and the first trip meter have a tenths digit in a different color, and the second trip meter doesn't have tenths at all. He also said the previous owner agreed that the odometer counted fast.
