Anyone ridden between Pittsburgh area and NY Fingerlakes?

I am planning my first long ride for mid May 2016. I will travel east on I80, north on 66, east across 6 to 14 north and 13 north. Just wondering if anyone on the board has traveled these roads. Thanks.

I have a little bit, but only the I80 Pittsburgh area. Looked like some fun roads down in the hollars. Even lost GPS coverage a few times lol.

If you're looking for twisty roads that are well maintained and clean, NYS isn't the place for that. If you're looking for great views I can message you a few.

The reason for the ride is because our family has a cottage on one of the Fingerlakes. I'm going to take a nice long lesurly ride up to help open it up. No hurry getting there. I tried to plan country roads as much as possible while still giving me the most direct diagonal route from point a to point b

Once I am at the lake I am well familiar with the area. I am just used to going by car and taking I90 and 20 east to get there.

I'd suggest you use google maps, but toggle the function that removes toll roads. Then map it out yourself from there!

I can't really say anything about the roads, but NYS is fairly uniform.

A friend of a friend does it every year. I'll ask him to ask on Tuesday.

Thanks for the help. I did plot the trip on Google Maps and my garmin. Part of what I did on Google Maps was to use "Street View", so I could see what the roads really look like. I avoided all tolls and most highways.

I live in Pittsburgh. If you're looking for well-maintained roads, look elsewhere.

I don't really know the roads around here well yet but the ones I have been on have been patchy and rough.

Thanks. I live between Pittsburgh and Erie. I planned my trip to take me across I80 to a out the Clarion exit, and 90 % of the rest of my trip to the Fingerlakes is on secondary roads. According to the Street view pics, the roads appear to be in decent shape. Lots of small towns to stop in for breaks.

NY roads are horrible, I thought PA's were until I moved here. I'm near Binghamton so south of the finger lakes.

no secret lots of PA roads suck and sometimes there are a few decent ones and the state finds some way to make them suck. There was a decent road I used to like to ride in SW PA and one spring the state decided to put road snakes everywhere to the point where there was almost as much tar as pavement and the road was perfectly fine and needed no such "treatment"

If you are looking to hit the turns hard the roads here can be a disappointment, but even in their poor state at cruising speeds trips through the forested mountains and valleys can be quite enjoyable IMO.

On side note, lots of people in the greater Pburgh area make trips south into WV and VA for decent rides.

I should post the vid to youtube of the one ride I took another vlogger on, up around here. I think we were just lucky we never hit one of the pot holes cause they were deep enough that you would fall to China, they were every where. The saddest part was that it would had been a great ride if the roads weren't so bad.

@Nu2Street, sorry but the friend of a friend goes to Americade every year. Some of the guys at work are thinking finger lakes this year but haven't done it yet.
@Finesse, Butler County seems better than Allegheny County. Not too hard to get up here from the East End. I use US-19 to get me to fun roads like 173 or 208. US-19 is pretty rural north of Zelienople.

I put together a 5 day route thru NY, PA, WV, KY, to Indy and home again a few yrs ago. I will see if I can find some of the awesome roads I used.

That said, is there a reason you are going there? South of Pittsburg is much better than north of it.

Sure is, our family has a cottage on one of the eastern fingerlakes. I have already plotted to take route 6 in PA for part of the trip. Other biker friends say it's a nice road for bikes.

A late update to this thread. I made the trip- 650 miles round trip. Many miles at 80mph cleaned the carbs out nicely!! No more rough takeoffs until the bike is warmed up. I also kept track of every mile ad gallon of gas. At high steady speeds, rpms running 8-10,000 for long stretches. I got 70-74 mpg out of the tanks! I stopped once at about 145 miles expecting to put in 3+ gallon and barely put in over 2. I saved the logs and locations of stops if anyone is interested. I did this first long trip solo- my riding buddy backed out. I had a lot of fun. The total of 8 hours each way (6.5 moving, @1.5 stopped) never felt like that long. I learned riding in 30-40mph wind gusts was way worse than truck turbulance. Thanks for all the input I received. I can't wait to do it again next summer!!

The local twisties have been rough. I've driven down them (don't have a street bike anymore) and they need work...

I really want to head out on the open roads and cruise long distance; it really sounds exciting!

My attention span isn't large enough. My butt burns after an hour. My hands get numb. Meh.
