Which bike looks better? (buying)

First one is a 2010 red ninja 250. It has only 3,000 miles on it. Guy is trying to get 2,900 for it. He owns a small bike shop and said the bike has been sitting for one year.. which kind of concerns me that the carbs could be messed up (all of you know, I hate carbs). It's in "mint" condition. This bike is located only about 30 minutes away

==========================================================
The next one up is a 2012 Green Ninja 250 (my favorite color) It has 9,000+ miles and he want's $3,000 for the bike. I'm mainly concerned that the miles may be too high. This bike is in "mint" condition. It is located roughly an hour away.

What looks like the better deal? I'm going to continue to update this thread with new bikes until I end up buying one. Thank you everyone

2nd one, but get the price down a bit as it's just a tad on the high side. Is the mileage high? Not for the bike, but for the price it's debatable.

I agree, my only thing that seems fishy about the post is that the post says they don't have time to ride, yet the bike has over 9k miles and only 2 years old. lol

9K miles is nothing if he commuted on it for the first year or any number of other reasons.

Having no time to ride is a problem in the present, the miles were put on in the past. Just my

Maybe he/she don't have time to ride "anymore". 9k in 2yrs is more than a cat that buys a bike for "image" sake yea... but I see that as a good thing.

Yea..go for the second one. Make sure you get papers or whatever on what maintenance he has done. Talk to him like crazy and don't leave anything unsaid. As @a wise man once said about inspecting the chain..."if someone takes the time to take care of the chain, chances are they are taking the time to take care of the rest of the bike."

didn't read anything, just looked at bikes. Personally I am not a fan of the 1st one, the SE graphics.... not for me. So green one is my choice based solely on looks alone

I agree everyone, I like the green one a lot more. And that's the one I will try and get.
@csmith12 How much would you say is a fair price (for me) for obtaining the 2012 green 250 with 9k miles

Also, what sort of things should I look for in a bike that has 9k miles, I know to look at tires. but what else? Like what needs replacing at that mileage? (spark plugs, carb cleaning, etc.) Also if he doesn't have maintenance records does that mean I shouldn't get it? Or how would that factor into the overall price. He's had the bike on craigslist for 22 days now, which may be a red flag?

I think it's specifically for the pregen, but should be similar to the newgen.

no papers probably means you'd have to check/do errything yourself just to be sure. 22 days might mean people aren't interested or the price is too high. I don't think there should be a red flag. Check the vin too and stuff.

They both look like fine bikes to me. I'd get whichever one I could talk the owner down in price more.

Also, make sure that 9k miles bike had it's valves checked. If not, I'd get other one.

Check to see that he did the 7500 mile service including valve clearance check. You should be able to do it yourself, but if not it will need to be done and it will cost you a couple hundred bucks.

I bought my 2011 SE this January with ~8000 miles and the service hadn't been done yet. I was able to knock $500 of the asking price right off the top. If you have to do the service and buy new tires I'd probably offer $2600 and negotiate from there.

Good post super easy way to knock some $$$ off since you need to get that done anyway. Not only that but you reminded me that I need to get that done myself in a week or two (sitting around 70xx miles atm)

I like the red one, myself.

9000mi is nothing on a bike, but check for cosmetic damage, and buy the one least damaged and/or the best deal.

Money on the table is a great bargaining tool.

Someone doing the 7500mi service....

probably a bad photo but the color looks wrong like it has been repainted. it's too light. but maybe just bad photo. i would go for the green one but neither of them knows what the bike is worth. kbb is a crock of **** and even if you were to pay attention to it, he lied in his listing about what kbb for it is. he said its 3500 when kbb is actually 3200ish. but kbb is notoriously overvalued. you shouldn't pay more than 2750 for a _MINT_ well taken care of 2012 250. no maintenance records means you assume they weren't done. so i would not pay more than $2500 for the green one. and the red graphics are just ugly imo.

I think I will try for 2,500 the best I can, but I think I will grab it for 2700ish if everything checks out okay. Thanks for the input

More information about the green bike. The guy who owns it said he just received the title in the mail yesterday. He just bought it but his car blew a motor and now needs to sell it for a new car. I guess he wants to get back what he paid or something..

So with that note he said he doesn't have any maintence records... also, he said he is very firm on the 3,000.

Not sure what to do, I really like the bike and want it, 3k doesn't sound that bad, I mean they retailed for 4.4k only 2 years ago. But it does have 9k miles....

what should I do? He lives a good hour away from me, so it's not like I can just "swing by".

Here's a few more bikes by the way. I'm really capped off at 3k so I would need to talk these down first.

-2011 white LE 2,300 miles - Crack in fairing near turn signal. $3,400
http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/mcy/4504480142.html

------

-2012 red 1,680 miles - mint condition $3,400
http://newlondon.craigslist.org/mcy/4484096812.html

------

-2012 red, 200 miles! - mint condition $3,500
http://newlondon.craigslist.org/mcy/4475832870.html

any ideas on these? I think white is out of the question since it has damage.

I'm currently selling my 2010 Island blue 250, with 22,000 miles, posted for $2600, willing to go to $2200. I find it pretty hilarious that people think, 9,000 miles is high milage for a bike. What your getting is a bike that has been ridden, not sitting in a garage "rotting". My Kawi ZRX1200R has 40,000 miles, run's like a beast, and has never even had a sparkplug change (getting one soon). My VFR is approching 30,000 miles with not 1 issue. Water cooled M/C engines ought to go 100,000 miles no issues, with regular maintenence (oil changes, valve clearance checks). We buy these things to ride, but my guess is most bikes get about 2000 miles per year. Mine get maybe 5000 per year (I have 4, so they get rotated). I'll take a well maintained higher milage bike over a garage queen any day. Ride 'em! Thats what they are designed for! Plus, it's good for your soul!!!! (and the bike's)

Throw down $2800 on the table, you should be able to ride away for $2900 or $2950. Or seller could be playing hardball for 3k, which might explain the 22 days on CL.

Money talks yo! Money + 22 days talks even more!

^^^agreed the real person of power in any negotiation is the person with the cash who's looking to buy, though that's only if the buyer believes that he leads the price negotiations and acts accordingly.

Yeah... and to be honest, The bike is 2 years old and is only 3 grand, that to me seems kind of worth it. I'll try my best to get them down first though.. But before I do that I want to sell my bike first. I have a potential buyer coming tomorrow. If he buys it then I will try my luck on getting this bike this weekend.

Don't know if you've sold the bike already but there's going to be a little sales event at Cycles 128. Might be able to get a 300 for an ok price since there's a extra $1000 off for a trade in. Never been to the place myself though and reviews are kind of mixed.

I appreciate it, but $1000 off is less than what I am selling my bike for on CL. I'll do some research on it anyway, thanks.

Meant $1000 on top of the trade in. But the ad says select models only so there's a pretty small chance it applys to the 300.

Well, guys I found one more I wanted you to check out for me.
http://newlondon.craigslist.org/mcy/4528931657.html
I'm hoping to go around to both the green bike with 9k miles and then if that bike doesn't work out check out the red one I just posted above.

Any insight on which one would be the best deal? I'm thinking red since it only does have 1,600 miles.

The red limited edition looks sweet...one word of caution. If you ever drop it the cost of a new fairing is way higher than a stock color fairing.

Ask me how I know.

No much to the ad but looks definitely worthy of checking out further. Try to find out about the first owner and history.

Well, he told me (her bf) that the bike had been pretty much sitting for the past year.

I asked him if the carbs are screwed up cause usually that happens after a year, (sputtering while acceleration)

He told me it DID when we started it after the winter but it seems OK now...

Does that seem like an issue at all? Will I inevitably end up cleaning up the carbs in the not so distant future?

Maybe not now, but it's a carbed bike, at some point in time the carbs will need cleaned. Don't let that stop you from buying if everything else checks out. It's a simple job, just kinda a pain to get the carbs in and out. A job best done with patience.

EDIT: I am not saying to buy it either. For $3k you should be able to find a nice bike that you shouldn't have to work on.

The other choice is that green 250 with the 9k miles?

Yep. But as others have said, if the 7k maintenance was not completed then the price should drop some. Because then your paying for it or doing the work yourself. Either bike could have you putting some work into it.

Hillbilly Logic: I would rather clean carbs than adjust valves or pay someone to do either.

I agree, and worst case scenario the bike just needs to get the carbs cleaned, which I mean, I have plenty of experience doing that with my other 250.

I'm going to definitely check out the red one tomorrow first, then on my way home I will check the other one, should I decide the red one doesn't check out.
