Please do not pay $6300 for a non-ABS model. People have gotten the ABS version for less than that in Cali. I didn't really haggle on my ABS bike and paid $6700 for mine. Overpaid but still not much more than the quote you have...

haha, well that's where it get's interesting. That collision I was in -- guess where I was going: back home to Vegas. I can stay in Cali as long as I need without any cost (I keep a little studio, it's cheaper than a hotel room given how often I'm in Cali and my employer subsidizes most of the cost of it too); the real issue is transport.
They can either book me a ticket back to Vegas or pay the difference in price and have me ride the bike back to register it in Nevada (one hell of a way to break in a new 300 huh?). I'll have to discuss my options with my insurance company Monday I guess.

Why would you get a 300 in Cali (it's way more expensive), plus isn't there different emission standards?

Yeah, the $6300 is the "CostCo price". It seemed high to me, but everything in Cali is super expensive so I'm never sure if it's 'normal' high or 'stupid' high. Anyone have any negotiation tips? Should I demand some target price (and if so which)? I was going to try going to the dealer I got my 250 from and play the 'loyal customer' card; they really like me there so it may work but I don't know.

Because I'm in Cali right now without a vehicle so it's the fastest way to get me back on the road. Cali does have different emissions standards but Vegas only gets Cali standard bikes anyway (it's so close to the border it became a major problem with Californians buying them in Nevada and then being told they couldn't register them in Cali). On my 250 what Paul and I did was basically rip out all the Cali equipment -- it's all basically additional stuff, the only major difference was the gas tank's air vent. I assume (?) the 300 will be similar.

Ouch, that sucks so much. My vote would still be to try and get one in Nevada though. I'm sure you're aware that the sales tax here is somewhat killer, on top of some of the points others have made. Though the idea of breaking in a 300 driving back to Vegas is pretty cool.

Anyway, I'm somewhat LA-ish, so if you ever want to grab grub or meet up for a ride when you're in town, you should totally let me know.

Get a 49 state bike and spare yourself the hassle of eventually tearing out all that extra smog crap later on. I agree with you on the ugliness of the 300 but its mostly with the white model, I think the green looks quite badass and that's saying something coming from me since I hate Kawasaki's

Take all the green on the 300 and swap it for KTM orange and I may just have to sell my Rojoracing project 250

To get a 49 state bike I'd have to go to a state OTHER than Cali or Nevada (all the Nevada dealers are in Reno or Vegas; which both border Cali and thus never get non-Cali bikes... so unless I want to go back home to Texas to pick her up that's going to be difficult).
And she's going to be black. Or violet if I can find someone to paint her.

I heard a story of a heavier rider (350+ lbs) who got into a nasty accident and was told by a doctor that the reason he didn't break any ribs or have serious injury to his internal organs from the type of fall he had was because he had such a good layer of "cushioning" on his abdomen it dispersed the force of impact!

Guess the weight advantage can go either way depending on the type of crash your in

And as far as the video games are concerned, play some Extreme-g 3 and hone those reaction times further! If you can race bikes that break the sound barrier, you should be able to handle a new 250 or 300 no problem

heh, I don't play a lot of racing games -- pretty much my only claim to fame in the genre is my Crazy-Modded Violet Viper in Most Wanted (the 2005 one). Sadly my mouse thumb is sore enough I haven't been able to play my own game this week, though my friends are forgiving me.

Ah I loved that game! I'm pretty sure I stuck with that chevy cobalt they start you with at the beginning of the game and just kept throwing new parts into it and by the time I got the m3 back at the end it was way way better lol. Seems unrealistic in retrospect though.

What games do you play now? Or not playing do to injury I should say.

Let's see: recently I've played XCom, Dishonored, Walking Dead, and of course my game (League of Legends).

Yep, that's "The Snake"; it is a great little turn but it's also where a lot of photographers and such are. People ride outside their limits -- for themselves, for the cameras -- and they lose control. The frequency gravel and such can get on this road is also a factor, but usually the spectators keep it pretty swept. I thought it was a fitting place to close things out, thanks for noticing and appreciating

Sure, I'm 28 and I started driving at 14. Of course, most of my life I've lived in suburbs/rural areas and not megaplexes like Vegas and LA.

Thanks. I have kids that are going to start driving next year, and seeing videos like this terrify me!

There are so many subtleties of driving that only come with a lot of experience.

When I was learning to drive, I remember someone telling me "You aren't an experienced driver until you've done at least 100,000 miles."

I think that's about right.

Glad you are ok. This could have been a lot worse, the cars could have been stopped to let a pedestrian pass by.

If pedestrians were passing there they would be nuts -- there's a cross walk not 20 feet down the road and then they aren't blindly running across effectively 7 lanes of traffic. Of course LA is filled with idiots.

Yakaru,

Glad you made it OK. Sorry to hear about your baby. Its pretty clear in the video that the cager was at fault.

I hope the insurance doesn't treat you too badly. Just remember that the other guy was at fault and you should not accept anything that's not a good deal for you. You have a video and they don't want that getting shown to a jury.

Just heard back from my insurance agent -- while the other party is covering it due to this being at fault when I heard that my own insurance didn't cover any gear but my helmet I was pretty surprised. I asked about a rider and I just got the call back -- there is no way to get State Farm to cover my gear beyond a clothing policy (which protects it against theft and such but not a bike accident). I brought up that this gear saved me from the hospital and my agent agreed, but the underwriting department just doesn't give any leeway here.

Anyone have any solid bike insurers in Nevada? I love my agent but it may be worth moving just my bike policy elsewhere for better coverage.

I'm not sure how good they are, but I have progressive and they cover $3000 in "accessories." I didn't make a claim when I had my spill because it was my fault and they wouldn't have paid anyway.

Its good the other guy's insurance is going to take care of you.

What happened to Hotaru? Did they take him away? Can you buy him back and fix him up?

Yep, wouldn't even let me take the plates/plate-holder off -- it's at the insurance company's shop now and I've heard I could expect to hear my options in a few days (which will probably be either straight cash or less cash and the salvaged bike back)

After all this talk of insurance and a letter I received in the mail last week stating the DMV has suspended my regs because they can't find proof of insurance in their database I bought progressive insurance. They where the best I could find for having 3 points on my license(all from the cage) and it came automatic with a minimum 3k accessory coverage.

Now I don't have to run from the cops because I'm riding uninsured, now I can run from them for the pure fun of it

Progressive should be able to sort this out ASAP. There is an electronic feed from their systems to the DMV, that they should be able to push.

That is at least one advantage I have: I haven't had anything happen to me in the last 10 years other than the 2 bike accidents, both of which were 100% ruled the other party at fault. The plus of being a careful type (though, in this case, obviously not careful enough).

I've got Progressive too and they were the cheapest that I could find by a huge margin, but ymmv. The 3k accessory coverage is nice to and you can up it up to like 5k I think.

Progressive was the cheapest I could find too. I called them up to discuss my policy several months ago and they asked if I wear a helmet. I say always. The next thing I know I'm getting a letter saying they reduced my rates. Not by much, but they did it. They didn't say it was because of the helmet, but the timing was interesting.

But on the darker side of progressive, they are notorious for sending lawyers to fight for the other guy to prove that you were at fault - even if he doesn't have progressive. The thing is that they can get out of paying an uninsured motor vehicle claim if they can prove you were at fault. Not reassuring.
