Those look nice Danno, too bad they're charging so much for them! $70 seems pretty steep for some little led lights.

oh wow, I didn't check pricing, that does seem bit high.

Same kit, comes with surrounding bezel, harness and choice of lenses for different indicator functions. $54

Okay, that's a tidy piece. Somehow $54 doesn't seem as bad when I account for the little mount, wiring, etc. Good find!

I use one if these for voltmeter on my track bike. USB ports powers my front & rear cameras so I don't have to deal with charging batteries. Also charges phone when I'm in pits

Nice, I have pretty much the same one on my SV. If I can find a suitable mounting location I will probably put one on this bike.

I have MLK day off, so I went for a chilly, somewhat damp ride today. I was determined to get a legit test run in on the 250 though as it's been well over a month since I got a good ride on on either bike. (I intended to get the 650 out Saturday morning only to find a dead battery). So today was the day to run the Ninja, rain or shine.
It did pretty good. No hiccups and the suspension is better than it was before what with the new springs and rear shock. I suspect I could have gotten away with 0.80kg/mm as the .85s are a little hard; maybe they'll settle in though. I kinda wish I had sprung for a YSS rear shock instead of being frugal and getting a used Ninja 300 shock; the back end still squats and bucks and squirms all over when I'm getting on it. Maybe that has something to do with the little 120 rear tire I'm running though. A 130 may improve that. Or I could add a click or two of preload.
The Vapor gauge is nice and does its job. Not much to say about it beyond that, although I miss the analog tach. I hooked up some cheap dummy lights for oil and neutral. I still need to check my speedometer against gps but I doubt it's that far off from reality. My gut tells me it's closer to true speed than the factory gauge was. The Trail Tech piece records maximums, so I zero'd everything before I left this morning and recorded it:

Not bad for a beat old 250 on a drizzly morning! Here was my route:

Nice ride! Bike's looking good!

Yeah, my Vapour was spot-on after doing front-wheel roll-out. Ended up about 9% slower readout than stock.

Odd, mine does... It's a curved bar-graph under the numbers from bottom-left to upper-right of display. I had to insert inline resistor to coil wire to get stable signal.

No, it has a tach, just not the round kind with the swinging needle It has a digital readout and a bar-style tach. Both are fine, but not what I'm used to. It does have a staged shift-light that I like. I have the yellow shift light set to 10k and the red light set to flash at 12.5k (or somewhere there abouts, I can't remember, whatever the redline is on the stock gauge is what I set it to).
I got out today, actually. I met up with my riding partner this afternoon and did the same route I did Monday, but it was pretty warm today so I really got to put the bike through its paces. It did fantastically well; I ran 28/32psi f/r on the tires, and preload on the rear shock is on the 3rd from the bottom. The bike is much more planted than it was Monday, although I can still tell the front end is a little abrupt. I'm using a fair amount of travel though, so I don't think I'll mess with it just yet. I also installed a 15t front sprocket last night and it seems to be in the sweet spot more now. My buddy was following and he said the engine sounded great. I just kept it right around 9-10k and the power was right there. It really turns in great, and handles the tight stuff wonderfully. It's not too much fun above 70mph; those little 16" wheels feel small at those speeds. I'm glad to have my SV for any rides further than DeLuz. Overall it was a real blast though, and I think it's the best tool for those roads.

Feb 1st and it's cold, relatively speaking, in California. Neither bikes are being ridden but I wanted to let the 250 get warm and idle for a bit seeing as Gordon did such a nice job on the carbs. This is as close as I get to riding right now:

I got the 250 out for a couple quick rides today, and finished wiring in some diodes to fix my turn signals. It was nice to work on the bike. It took surprisingly quick to get from here:

Got my handy directions

Getting serious though, calls for coffee and the dining room table:

They do! The LEDs are very bright too, but the flash rate is a little slow. I need a different relay... I've seen people complain about flash rates on different LEDs and I know there are a couple different types of LED flasher relays. I just need one that is a little quicker. It works for now though.

The bike is really running great though, even with the old gas. I Sta-bil'ed it last week or two and it helped a lot. I want to burn it up and get a fresh gallon in there.

Got out on my local route yesterday. It was hitting low 90s but not bad overall. I got the bike good and hot and it never overheated, so that's good. I put about 60 miles on it and my confidence is growing in this bike. The engine seems to be holding up to an hour+ straight of 10k and I flushed the oil right after and it seemed pretty clean. I think I would benefit from a 130 tire on the back; that 120 squirms a lot. Gosh, good luck finding 16" sport tires anymore though. I'll run this down to the threads. I was also surprised to discover that the original speedometer is not as inaccurate as I had suspected, it seems to be about 5mph optimistic up around 60-70mph. I can account for that.

Well, Gordon did some good work on the carbs, and that's half the battle. I've just been keeping a minimum of fresh Sta-Bil'd gas in it and running it hard when I get the chance. Other than that I'm just listening for grenade sounds

I keep an eye out for 300s on ebay, and I have to wonder how that would change this machine. It has a plethora of weaknesses, but they balance each other out. I figure I have somewhere between 25-30hp and I'm using all of it now. If I go 300 with stock 250 carbs I guess that would put me about 35hp, which would certainly change the balance of the bike. Dunno if that would be for the better. Oh well, I'm not changing anything unless this 250 pukes its guts. Even then, it will be hard to not just sell it for parts and get an R3 or similar.

EX500 engine swap... Same effort as 300 for double power ~60bhp.
No trial & error carb-tuning needed since EX500 carbs are already oprimised for that engine.

I agree with Danno on that one swap the engine for 60hp and you will have something there !
Personally I don't need to go THAT fast when I go.... I just need to go MORE ! HAHAHAH
....
well, My springs for the RX4 should be here today and I'm going to take the Triumph into the shop in a bit.... maybe I'll leave the Triumph by the door and take the RX4 in there instead.... I think the Triumph can be easily worked on outside but the RX4 needs the shop .... so
I think I have a plan..... some time soon I want to take the Ninja out for a spin
.... I'm still hesitant about it reving up slowly though.... maybe after a run it will clear out and run good again... Bikes do not like to sit for long times !
..... and that is what they do around here ... I need more energy..if any one has an extra quart or two I'll take it ! HAHAHAHA !
...

Huh, I did not know the 500 was a bolt-in. They certainly are cheaper than 300s, I will have to investigate.

This bike does NOT need 60hp though!

I don't see a 500 in this bike's future. The more I read about it from folk who have done it, it is not in fact a bolt-in. So far I see rear upper engine mounts need to be redone, the sprocket needs to be shimmed, fitting the coolant lines/cap requires mod; all to get an unbalanced point-and-shoot machine. It seems to miss the point of the original bike.

I like this bike with its original 250. The 300 is better because of the head and intake design, not to mention the cc bump. I could see that motor in this frame still being "fun"; the 500... not so much. But that's me.

Also, I have an sv650 Sorry, those beat out the Ninja 250/500/650 family on all counts! But that's just me...

I'm to the point I don't want to work on the bikes any more I just want to ride them...... but it is extremely fun to have a high power to weight ratio in a bike
.... when you can wheelie at the blip of a throttle the ride becomes 5 times funner ! ...
....
now I gott'a get that Triumph back together... the rear caliper was indeed froze up.... we'll see if I fixed it or not LOL....
later !

I put two good rides in on this bike over the weekend. Temps were fantastic and the bike did great, there seem to be no more charging issues and fueling is fantastic as always since Gordon's carb-redux.

All I can say now (if I'm nit-picking) is that the 120 rear tire is at its limit. It squirms a bit when you're really getting on it. I could see installing a 130 before too long. The rear shock is off a 300, and it does okay but not fantastic at keeping the back wheel on the ground. I won't change that out until I get a little more rubber under the back end though. I am currently running 1 extra tooth on the front sprocket and I think I'll go back to stock on that as I need my rpms to come up a little faster. I have to keep momentum going on this a lot more than with my 650 so every little bit helps. It seems like anything under 10k rpms is just dead slow.

I got some footage with my 360 camera but I haven't taken the time to edit it down. Videos are cool but I have little patience for the processing I stopped for a single pic though, this is just north of Fallbrook at the Santa Margarita Preserve:

Yeah, I put 16t front sprocket on my 2001 for commuting. Really calms down RPMs, but needs 2 downshifts for passing.

the 16 tooth on my 250R really changed how the bike preforms from the stock setting ...I really disliked having to shift 3 times before getting to 30mph !
However,.... that did drastically change the acceleration on bottom end....
it's much slower gaining RPM's and accelerating now.... which in my mind is a good thing. as it was TOO QUICK before .... if I could have that quickness without the nessicity of the shifting it would be great but having to shift 3 times before you get to 30 mph is plane silly it's like in stock mode it had trail gearing on it, but it's not a mountain bike ! ....
but obviously I am just not used to the High revving RPM of the Ninja and don't use the RPM's near enough on this machine.... the way it sits I can cruse at 75 and 80 MPH all day if my butt could take that hard seat ! I would guess that 110 to 120mph would be top speed now as it is geared for speed but I have no business going that speed anymore ! LOL
....

I believe 14t is stock for the front, no? I went up one, so I think I have a 15t now. I've heard the 16t fits with a newer-gen sprocket cover but I didn't have to do that. If the 15t makes it this much harder to spool up I can imagine the 16t would be a highway commuting-only ordeal.
Regardless, I have the old sprocket sitting in my toolbox now and I plan to reinstall that. I'll count them for science.
I do know I'm not shifting 3 times before I hit 30, but I'm probably revving it more than most would.

lol, 110, 120 The 16/44 gearing may calc out to that, but that little 250 doesn't have the hp for it. I may have hit 90 on a straight last Saturday afternoon, but the rpms weren't climbing fast enough and I wasn't near redline. Maybe I was 11k. Dropping a tooth up front will help fix that.

LOL.... well, perhaps I'm generous ! maybe down hill with the wind at your back eh ?
all I know about the Ninja 250R is that it acts like a 650cc of years gone by
and most... if not all of them struggled to reach 110mph ! so barely reaching 100mph is fine with me HAHAHAHA
I doubt my 1977 Triumph could do much more than 110mph to be quite honest.
I don't use the RPM near enough on the Ninja and that is where the HP is !
but I do know it is one powerful motorcycle despite it's size !
it's a unique machine !
a while back after I first got it I took it on the freeway and opened it up
and I was very surprised at how well it handled that ! I was cruising at 70 to 75mph and it had much more to give..... but that was with the stock gearing
with the stock gearing passing at 75mph shouldn't be a problem at all
but with the gearing I have on it now I don't know.... i don't think it will be a problem because I have so much RPM to spare.... I may have to shift down for acceleration but it will do it ! .....
funny . I just realized I haven't ridden the Ninja this summer ! I've been trying to get the RX4 working properly for my "shortness" !
and I still find it Ironic that the 1977 Triumph I haven't had to touch at all as I can flat foot it with ease.... but anything new and I have to modify it....
And that SUCKS !!!!!
LOL
Bob......

Thanks Bob! I hear you on the braking, I'm still getting used to the front brake on this bike. I'm still getting to know its character
ps I went back to a 14t front sprocket and wow. Gearing is spot on. The power is much more accessible. I just have to get everything smoothed out.

SV master cylinder upgrade

A while back I upgraded the master cylinder on my SV to a Brembo piece off an R6. It's radial and has a slightly larger diameter piston (common mod); I like the braking of it now.
A week or two back a dude on the SV forum needed some stock brake parts, reminding me that I had the old mc sitting in a box. He just needed the lines, but I pulled the mc out and gave it a look. Still clean and I noticed the piston dia is 5/8". The stock Kawasaki piece is 1/2". I looked at the brake line routing and it seemed like a direct swap, save for fitting a reservoir cup. I found a mini-reservoir on ebay for $10 and fabbed up an aluminum bracket. The end result is pretty nice: there is more braking power (although I never saw the ninjette's front brake as a weak link), so now it really stops. I'm glad I have some hard front springs in the forks or this would be very divey under hard braking. The lever is adjustable, and I like the bare aluminum look. It was a nice free upgrade.

Going to a larger piston will increase the force required at the lever. Are you saying you like it better, having to squeeze harder?
