It made the most awful sound after startup.. :(

So I went to go for a ride today. Started up my bike, and immediately upon start up, it made a very loud snapping sound. Like if you were to take a length of wood and snap it in half over your knee. and then during my ride, I also noticed that there's a lot of heat coming out on my left calf. Any ideas? I'm worried!

Sounds like it backfired. No big deal, seems to happen to everyone.

Hmmm im not sure if this has happened to my bike @ start-up yet.
Does the Sound, sound More like a Small Rock 'TING' if thrown at your bike, in a metal area, like the gas tank or frame? Cuz ive heard the 'TING' while riding, shifting, etc! Im Not sure, but i think my Ninja mustve kicked up a ROCK and hit the frame or sumin'
Are you sure your bike is FULLY in Neutral, and isnt just Slipping into 'True' Neutral during this time? - thats all i can guess

As for the added Heat on your left leg... hmmm i seem to sometimes Feel Extra Engine Heat from my 'jewels area', and sometimes thighs... and maybe Left leg also! Not sure... but ill repost this week as i will Pay attention to my Rides with the added Left Leg Heat!

What about heat coming off the left part of the bike? Does anyone else experience this? The grill like thing that covers the sprocket gets very hot, I got home over 4 hours ago, just went to go check a few things on my bike for an oil change tomorrow, and parts of the bike are still hot!

That would be what I'm talking about. Haven't lubed the chain yet, oil change is my first priority. It also seems that the sprocket cover may be picking up heat from the engine, and I tried checking for a coolant level but I couldn't see anything clear enough so I'll take the fairing off tomorrow to take a good look. Silly me likes to assume things are okay when they're new.

yep, lube every 400 miles, so you're good there. how's your chain slack measurement? do you have at least 1" of slack at the midway point of the chain run?

That is a good question. I'll have to check tomorrow as it's a little late to be making noises in my house right now as I'm still living with my mother dearest and she wouldn't be too pleased. I'll let ya know!

Okay.

I'm just looking for possible reasons that additional friction at the sprocket might be generating heat. I do think what you are experiencing may be normal, but I've never felt the sprocket cover to see how hot it gets.

Thing is, I'm not sure if it's the sprocket cover getting hot or if it's the engine getting hot and heat transfers to the sprocket cover.. all I know is that the past couple of days I've been riding, I've been experiencing a lot of heat on my left calf. Almost to the point where it's uncomfortable.

well, that tube just to the front of the sprocket cover gets very hot as that's an oil tube, I believe. Have you tried feeling that to see if that's the source of the heat?

careful... it's hot!

Yep. Problem is, everything gets hot! even the frame around it. I'll check things tomorrow like the chain slack and coolant levels and see how it runs after I change the oil (it looked kind of cloudy when I took a quick peek, which I know is not good)

Crystal, how fast have you been riding? I have a beautiful 18 mile ride through the valley to and from work, and on teh way home, I tend to be running 25-35 in a stretch of it, usually in about 3rd gear which with the elevation changes maxes me out around 8k rpm... I've noticed after that stretch, especially when it's warm, that there is a LOT of heat - even the gas tank feels hot, but it's normal afaik...

If you're the popo, I've been going legal speed limits.
If you aren't, well then... two thumbs up for the hard break in method.

backfire on startup is common, heat on the left leg probably normal heat dissipation, as long as its not burning you. Coolant and oil lights are not on when you noticed this?

Nope no lights come on, just a lot of heat!
Just finished changing my oil, and it looked pretty dirty. Hoping the new oil might make it not so bad.

I also feel a lot of heat coming from that area....but I need to lube my chain..I'm over 400 miles. I plan on changing out the oil and lubing the chain tomorrow night ill let you know if i see a difference. Could it be because I ride in jeans so i notice the heat coming up onto my bare leg...where as people with leathers wouldn't notice it as fast.
