Need Advice

Hey guys,

A friend of mine is interested in purchasing a 2001 Ninja 500R.

Here's the ad on craigslist. http://baltimore.craigslist.org/mcy/3194794596.html

I'm going to take it for a test ride for him. What should I look for when I ride the bike? Do you guys think this is a decent deal? I know just as much information about the bike as you guys do - only what is in the ad.

That looks dumb.

And loud. I wouldn't buy it just on that.

Seems a bit overpriced honestly but I know location matters. I say keep looking, end of season sales are coming.

If I were you, I would plan a day trip and open up your search to a larger region. In little as 8-9 hours travel time you could have a new gen with 0 damage for near the same price.

Okay, thanks for the responses. I told him what you guys said, but he's impatient. Anything I should look for/feel for when I'm riding?

"$1900 OBO" -- best offer would be about $1000. anything higher than that is... uh... well i guess if someone wants to pay that much for that bike then good for them.

I agree with alex. It looks like a perfectly fine motorcycle, but not at that price. Not anywhere close to that price. I feel bad for whoever pays over a grand for it. Nothing screams "I thrashed and crashed my bike!" more than flat black paint and a plastics removal/street fighter conversion.

Yeah. I convinced him not to get it. He's sad, but understands.

The owner is most likely deaf. Tell your friend to get a 250, or are those too girly for him?

WELP. He got it down to $1100 so he's going to do that. @Jiggles I tried to convince him, but he started on a CBR600RR. He doesn't want to go lower.

Again - guys. When I test ride it. Is there anything in particular that I should look for or feel in the bike that would be telltale signs of me saying to my buddy NOT to buy it?

Having ridden a 250 before, you should have a good idea of how it should feel. Out of place vibrations, ect.. ect.. Also make sure you listen just as much as you look.

Lastly: What to look for when buying a used bike

If he knows how to ride, why doesn't he test ride it? It's going to be his bike, he should know how it feels before he buys it.

I'm not sure why he didn't want to just ride it himself. Anyways, we went and looked at it... the thing was a piece of ****. I told him 100 times NOT to buy it, but he insisted.

Can't tell some people.
