Knee thumping?

So I was watching the 2013 AMA race at mid Ohio and I noticed Josh Herin (#2) was smacking his left knee against the tank before going into many right handers. Anyone know why?

when you need to go 4 gears in a couple seconds, it certainly looks like you're humping the bike, or hitting it with your knee or something.

I was there to see him ride in 2013 and noticed that too. Mid-O is a very technical track in the back section. Maybe it's just his style to ensure his knee is where he wants it to be, as he can tell it via feel quickly. Riders do all kinds of strange stuff to make it work for them.

Also, the right handers on this track are some of the more technical ones on the course. Many are blind and off camber or over crests. So it lends itself for focus on the task at hand vs. the small details. Maybe that is just his way of allowing for focus in other areas.

Also, having many, many, many laps on mid-o. Putting a knee know in turn 2 (the chicane before the keyhole) is serious riding. Most A group track day riders don't put a knee down there.

And just so you know... they went even faster in 2014. To get into the 1:30's is really fast, got get into the high 1:20's is insanely fast.

Mid-Ohio is one of those tracks that has 2 personalities. The first 4-5 turns are pretty much point and shoot, the back half of the track lends itself to "carry the speed". You simply can't go fast here unless you can really ride.

On top of that the track is quite moody, the grip gets better the more laps you put down. Some days the grip is there, other days.... not so much. Many times the race is decided by 3 corners, turn 7 (6 in AMA), the keyhole and carousel. Drafting on the back straight is a factor as well.

There is only 1 bump that is a real factor. The bump on exit of the carousel. Some hit it, others say to avoid it. There are 2 good and fast lines through there. One line has you in the 9'' between the candy and the bump, other has you straight through the bump.

For fast riders, the exit of the carousel is one of the coolest parts of the course. As your bring the bike up pinned, you flicking the other way, the bike shimmys a bit as you hit the bump and straight to knee down for the front straight. Mostly one just ignores the bump all together, it's over before you feel it at any real fast pace. The other part is there is a shift point before the left hander entering the front straight for added fun!!!!

The only other bump on the track is at the exit of the keyhole. The cars can lay down serious rubber as they hammer this exit. Makes for some interesting riding through there for bikes.
