Won't rev past 5k :(

I rode the bike to work today without issues, but when I started on my way home, I got a horrible surprise when I was revving up in 1st gear. The bike lurched and started shuddering around 5k rpms and wouldn't go any higher. I put on pods, a jet kit, an aftermarket exhaust, and changed the plugs about 4000 miles ago, so that shouldn't be the issue and did a valve job to her about 130 miles ago which seemed to be successful and I'm hoping that me going into the engine didn't mess anything up.

I don't know much about carbs icing over, but it's 28F out if that means anything. The bike idles fine. I did let her idle a bit longer than usual while I was putting on my winter gear and I did do one thing that was stupid. I plugged my heated stuff in while the bike was on causing a small arc between the connecting points for the plug, but that wouldn't affect the bike, would it?

I'd really appreciate some help with this.

Same thread topic here: can't rev over 5K RPM

Maybe the problems are similar?

Sorry, I don't believe that's the issue. As a matter of fact, before taking the fairings off and taking the carbs apart, I decided to swap my BRT-TIS with the old CDI I have just for the heck of it since it was an easy thing to check and the bike revved fine. So I think my problem was caused by the BRT-TIS malfunctioning.
What should I do now?

I'd talk to whomever sold me the BRT-TIS.

28 degrees F. is pretty cold for riding with pod filters. You could have a small icing problem as well as damage to the BRT/TIS. Even though The BRT/TIS is rated for operating at -15° to 80°C, the cold could be playing a part as well.

It's a nice 51F out now and the stock CDI works fine, but after warming up the bike properly and swapping it out for the BRT-TIS just for kicks, it's definitely the BRT-TIS that's messing up since the bike would go crazy around 4.5-5k rpms and not go any higher. Also, thank you for the links.

I had this problem with my bike too, but the temp was more around 70 degrees. At about 5k, bike would max out in rpm's and if I pulled the throttle any more it would drop immediately and die.

I ran seafoam through the gas tank and that seemed to clear up the issue. But I noticed something interesting. When my petcock was on the main tank setting it worked fine with the seafoam running through it. But when I turned the petcock to reserve on a day when I wasn't sure if I had enough gas to get where I was going, it started to do the same thing again. After turning it back to main, it cleared out after a few seconds of giving it some throttle.

In my case at least, I think the problem has more to do with my petcock than with my carbs or air filters.

Might be worth checking in yours too.
