Marco Melandri has topped the FP1 timesheets at the World Superbike class' first visit to the Motorland Aragon circuit, taking over the lead from championship leader Carlos Checa with a quarter of the session left, and Checa could never claw back the difference. Melandri and Checa were the only two riders to get under the two minute mark, 3rd place man Ayrton Badovini - a revelation on the satellite BMW Italia bike - nearly half a second behind Melandri, while Aprilia's Leon Camier was a couple of hundredths behind the BMW man. Max Biaggi's weekend got off to an indifferent start, crashing on his first lap out of the pits before remounting and ending the session in 7th.
