Another First: MC failed inspection

I went to our local MC Shop (not a dealership) for the annual inspection. The bike was fine---what failed were the tyres. He thought that I got good service out of the OEM Dunlop 501s---11,000 miles. Since the bike is mostly used as a Sport Touring Bike, I ordered a new set of 501s. They were less expensive than Pirelli, BT-45. I looked at Metzler and got sticker shock.

My stock 501's have lasted me 12k mile thus far. Did yours fail due to the tread or did the guy not like how un-round they became?

I'm afraid when I take mine in for inspection this month I'll be needing new tires too. With 10,000 miles out of the Dunlops (and $150 for front and rear delivered), you bet your ass that's what I'll tell the dealer to put on!

Sean, The front tyre was quite "cupped" and the rear tyre was at the wear mark. What I thought was interesting was that the owner of the shop/well respected mechanic, felt that my pressures of 28/32 were too low for the kind of riding I did (Touring--going 500mi in a day) He suggested 36/38 as an all around pressure to be reduced to 32/34 in wet conditions. I tend to follow his advice because he has a long history of road racing, and owns several Ducati Motorcycles--one being a red XEROX Ducati with more Carbon Fibre than anything I have ever seen. That machine could strike terror into the best of us. His personal ride is a Honda Literbike--a couple years old, barely street legal, in pristine condition. His other personal bike, which he just sold, was a ZX10R (Green) I tried it out, and it was just too much bike for me. When I get the new 501s this Friday, I will run the 36/38 pressure and get back to the forum with a situation report (SITREP).

Dunlops are fine over normal riding situations. If you really want to lean the bike, Dunlop has to be one of the worst tires to use (at least that was the case for my 07). They had a horrible feel. That is why I went with the PSD's.

Mark - two different dunlops. The K691's on the pregens are just about the worst tires I've ever experienced. The GT501's that came on some 2008's are great all around tires. Night and day.

Alex, I see that you have a ZX10R. Switching back and forth between the 10R and the Ninjette has to be quite an experience. The acelleration of the 10R reminded me of the Vincent I owned for a very short time when I was 18 ---sold for self preservation. The 10R has to be the most fantastic handling bike I have ever ridden. The engine is as smooth as silk and the brakes are incredible. The acelleration would take a while to get used to. It gives a new meaning to fast.

Just a thought, but knowing how "slippery" new tires can be, you should probably be extra careful since you are also riding new tires at a higher pressure than you might be used to.

Scott, Thanks for the Heads Up. My mechanic said the same thing---advised riding with great caution to "Scrub In" the tyres. He suggested 150mi.

I just replace the factory rear tire last week. I had over 16K on it, front still has a few thousand left in it.

Chris, My 501 Dunlops should be in on Monday. It is nice to have MC mechanic interested in bicycles. He works on my MC and I work on his bike. It ocurred to me the other day that very few people work on their own bikes--then I looked at the wall over my tool bench and see all these blue handled tools (Park). Duh? These are all bicycle specific tools and they are expensive as hell. Of course a person interested in working on his/her bike, could get the specific tools for the bike they own and that would be less expensive. As a shop, I don't get away that easy.

It is required by certain States. I know North Carolina is or at least was an inspection state when I lived there. Florida, where I am now, it is NOT required.

Haven't ordered them yet, but the price is from here

I passed the inspection this morning so I didn't bother to ask, but my dealer can probably get them a little cheaper.
