I was only doing it bc not many people had them, nor the tools to cut etc. I think in reality i was charging 2 or 3 bucks in labor and rest in material. But that being said, if I find an old set I will put up dimensions for you. If I cant you would have to ask someone that I sold to. ill look in storage this weekend and see if I can help out.

yeah I changed my front end to a newgen so I would have to redo it to work but all in all hippo hands might be easier for a newgen

1/8 inch. You can use thicker material if desired, but may need to use longer mounting bolts.

You can use plexiglass, acrylic or similar plastic sheeting. If you aren't extremely careful, you can break the plastic using power saws. I prefer hand tools.

Thanks for the info on the material. I have used a knife or thin edge to repeatedly score the material along the line I want to cut and then bend the material with pliers near the scored edge. The deeper you can make the cut the cleaner the material will finally break.

Do you have a better method?

Band saw works well on plexiglass, followed by block sanding edge, then polishing with a polish intended for gel-coat bath surrounds.

Professional results!

Well.. I am definitely not a professional but I did manage to get a couple of pieces cut from a 12x12 inch piece of 1/8 clear plexiglass and by playing with a propane torch* , I now have wings....Ugly but I surprised at how effective they are ..No rain test yet but they can only help .

* I highly advise against heating in the oven as it has been three days and the kitchen still stinks and yeah..I DID sightly overcook..

That looks good. Any more shots? I might have a go at a newgen front and see if I can make winter wings work. Pregen was a lot easier bc of the square body.

I would love to see some more shots of the bike with the wings installed. What is the adjustable controller above the outlet?

Random side question - does the blinking LED bother you or is it placed where it's blocked from view? Been wanted to permanently mount my controls, but the spots I look at to place them leaves me wondering about that bright blinking light shining all night.

I have not ridden with them at night yet..Interesting question as I never considered it..I purposely positioned the controls so I could see them while riding.. I use to have the controller tucked away under the carbs on hte zrx and altho it was easy to see that they were on, they did not seem extra bright...

I might have to mess with some plexi i have lying around and see what I can do for the newgen front. Never thought to bend them like that.

I was surprised at how stable they are.. I do think they had noticeable drag in a head wind..I just went out for a short trial and I cant be sure cause I do not know how hard the wind was blowing but as far as affecting the bike stability, there was none.
Teri, I don't think the leds are going to present a problem since they are "aimed" across the bike instead of at my face and being so small, I just don't think they will be a problem. It sure is nice to be able to see and change settings as needed tho...( They have also been mistaken for an alarm set up too...I didnt say any different when asked, just smile and walk on)

You're embarr by that set up? Seriously? I love it!

How is everyone bending this stuff? What thickness have you found that works well? I think I saw a mention of 1/8 inch thick.

I seriously need better windscreen and hand protection on this bike. Factory windscreen sends everything into my chest and under my helmet. There is no had protection.

For the thin stuff we're talking about, a hot air gun (not a hair dryer) or a propane torch works.

You'll want to clamp up the smaller plane of the workpiece that gets bent between two pieces of wood held in a vice. Then slowly heat the workpiece with your torch (back and forth along the bend line, which is just above where it's clamped). Not too close, or it will bubble the plexiglass!

Try bending the part sticking out of the vice: when it's ready, bend it to the desired angle (or a little further, as there'll be a bit of "setback"). Hold it in position for a few seconds while it cools. Voila! A finished hand protector!

Practice with a scrap piece of plexiglass first. You'll be a pro at this by the end of the afternoon!

I intend to make a set of these for my pre-gen sometime next year. I figure most of the time will be spent designing it and making the cardboard template.

I will just add that if you mess it up, just lay it on a flat surface and heat the piece, it will flatten back out,,and keep the gun/torch moving , do NOT leave3 it in one placew and heat the underside a bit too, not just the top...

When I have the mitts on, the forward part is flat and catches the wind as I am riding, causing the fabric to oscillate (?). It's pressed up against my brake lever, so I end up with an accidental brake modulater for my entire ride as the fabric presses just enough to trip the light sensor but not enough to apply the brakes.

Had two riders tell me that my brake light looked like it was flickering as if it was going out.

So, looking for a cheap solution to mount on my handlebar to hold the fabric away from the lever. Thinking the little lever guards that racers use.

Installed a pair of these on the KLR250 yesterday. USD $20 plus tax.
