Steering Damper Bracket

Does anyone know where I can just buy a bracket to mount a steering damper? I can find some dampers online for ~ $50 but it looks like they don't include or offer the bracket for the individual bike....

Did you mean 36mm? Those are my clip on sizes..... I found the fork clamp but don't I need another bracket to secure the other end of the stabilizer?

This might sound really dumb, but what does the steering damper actually do?

Yes, sorry 36mm for pregens. Us race guys just mount it to the front stay as seen in Rexbo's build thread. I don't think the front stay on the pregens will lend itself to such an easy install. So another bracket may have to be fabbed or you can get more creative. Top mount with an anchor stem is another option but may require some drilling into your top triple.

Maybe someone with a damper prepped pregen can comment more. Also, if you come up with a mounting solution, post it up!

Most riders deem it as unnecessary for a 250, although some race org require it to pass their tech inspection.

Well I'm mounting one to correct my steering wobble. I don't race at all I ride freestyle and it's really killing some of my progress atm.

The way he mounted it in the build thread looked pretty good to me. I'm gonna order the damper and play around with measurements around the forks and see what I come up with. It'll be easier once it's in my hands. I'm also installing a handbrake on my left bar and relocating my ignition switch so I've got a lot of fabbing to do. Oh and possibly a foot-hole in my passenger seat. Can you say re-sale value?? lol

Where's the damper itself mount to? That part goes on the fork tube. I get that. But the other part? Confused

Edit: just read the link. Shoulda done that the first time.

Nope. I don't think it needs it. I get headshake every once in a while, but only when I've got too muh pressure on the bars over bumps. It's all just feedback telling me that I'm doing it wrong.

On a dedicated track bike that gets ridden 110% every time I'm on it, I'd likely feel differently.

Does anyone know if this damper is non-adjustable? There are plenty of really cheap dampers out there but they seem to be non adjustable and I'd hate to install one that didn't have enough or too much preload on it....

I do see a torx screw on it....

Tried googling it but got nada

stroke matters too, not just size

The stroke of a steering damper has to be enough to allow lock-to-lock handlebar motion.

Thanks for pointing that out. I just haven't gotten around to measuring it yet.

It was a little cumbersome to measure but I got around 5in of travel which equates to ~127mm..... Does this sound right?

I can basically buy any damper as long as it has at least that much stroke correct??

sounds in the right ballpark

The Concours requires about 142mm and I used a Sprint (138mm travel, 420mm overall length) and shimmed the fork stops.

Ok so if you had used 142mm+ stroke damper you wouldn't need to shim the forks correct?

Oh and how do you set the damping on yours? I'm looking at it on your webpage but I don't see any adjusting knob? Are all dampers adjustable??

more damper stuff

Yes, if there was one with exactly 142 mm of stroke. The next size Sprint is 160mm stroke, 460mm overall length, and wouldn't fit under the fairing.

The damping is adjustable, you can see the knob on the shaft end in the pic beside the measuring stick. If I left the knob in place, it would bash the inside of the fairing, so I adjusted it and then took off the knob.

For the record, it's adjusted to the minimum setting, completely cleans up the wobble.

Well it looks like I might have to go with a Chinese maker since everything is either non adjustable (which I'm worried might be too soft) or wayyy too much money..... Oh well no need to dump a lot of $$ just to get rid of some wobble.

Got my chinese steering damper in the mail today. I'm actually surprised of the quality but the true test is on the bike. It has 10 positions to adjust it to but I think the lowest setting is stiff enough. I'm not sure I could even turn the bars in time with the highest setting. I'll be figuring out how to attach it in the next few days. Stay posted!

I asked for a silver one but gold is fine. I hope this one has enough travel on it I measured the stroke at 2 7/8" but it does pivot in the center....

Just looked at the bike and saw something pretty cool... There are threads on either side of the steering tube they look around 6 or 8mm thick and could potentially be where I mount this beast! Go check your bike out...

Does anyone know what they are for??? I don't remember unbolting anything from there....
