2008 Kawasaki Concours

Took another bike apart. This is a 2008 Kawasaki Concours that is getting a valve adjustment.

I had no idea they had variable valve timing. The motor is basically the same as a zx14 motor. Very cool bike with lots of cool gadgets though it is somewhat of a pain to work on.

Yeah, I had no idea these bikes even had variable valve timing! It's so widely known on bikes like the VFR with VTEC (good or bad, you decide) but I didn't know about this.

On a related note: Anyone see the VVT system on the new GSXR? It's a mechanical system using a centrifugal flyball setup inside the intake camshaft sprocket.

30 something thousand. All of them were out.

@choneofakind

I was curious why they decided on a centrifugal setup. Someone mentioned that is was to skirt the rules in MotoGP but teams have been using pneumatic valves in GP for a while now. MUCH quicker, lighter and easier to control.

So why would they go with an antiquated system?

**edit: I didn't read your posted article before I responded. That is the article I remember reading that went over the GP aspect**

Yes. The exhaust camshaft is of "normal" configuration. It does not move independently of the camshaft gear.

Yepp yepp, GP has rules against electronic or hydraulic actuation for VVT, so mechanical means are where it's at. Cool thing is the street bikes have electronic actuators that change the spring preload on those little springs which oppose the flyballs, so that opens up more adjustment and control capability on street applications. Future street bike engines should be pretty sweet, like the VTEC vs VVT-i vs MIVEC vs SkyActive vs whatever wars going on now.

Nice Bike! I have a 2006 Concours, and it is the last year for the 1000 engine. It's a very nice sport tourer, and is my retirement bike! It has 17" wheels courtesy of a rear Mean Streak rim and caliper mount (shaved on my mill), and a ZX1100 front rim (GPZ1100) to get good tire choices. I have a Russell Day Long seat, and just picked up a set of Hell-Bars for it. They are still in transit lol... Oh, and the trunk is from a 86 Yamaha Venture Royale, as the wife liked the Venture comfort.

Connie14 would be on my shorter list of special purpose wish bikes as a touring sled.

@Hellmutt just traded his zx14, it was a pain in the butt for him to work on.
Connie is a good bike.
