Tach and speed off??

I have gotten another 250 this time a good running one. My only thing and I noticed it almost immediately the tach vs speed seem off? 60mph 8K rpm. I know I’m sixth gear that can’t be right and I did a bit of research on the ignition box causing the issue. Which brings me to the more important question is the tach just off or are the actual rpm’s that high? Does it do any damage to leave it as it is? At least for the rest of this riding season? Or is it screwing up the timing and such?

That's about right...

https://gearingcommander.com shows 65mph @ 8K-rpm.

Verify you've got stock gearing F/R. When I went to 16t front-sprocket, 65mph was around 7K-rpm.

Ok to report back it’s definitely off. 60 is at about 8K and 65 9k. That’s the indicated speed on the bike so I figure 65 is probably closer to about 60.

So far in my very short ride (12 miles) the bike runs great. I haven’t really pushed it into any turns I am still breaking in the sport demons I put on.

Ok so a much longer ride today and as the temp goes up so does the tach reading. At one point I was seeing 9k at 60mph. Most of my commute is through some nice road with some higher speed turns and it’s strange to see it reading almost 11k at 70mph.

Also noted is the fuel gauge being off? Filled full and wouldn’t go past 3/4th of the gauge.

Well I checked the gearing and it’s stock 14/45 my tach is way off at least a thousand rpm’s higher than it should read. It goes exponentially not linearly off so it’s hard to gauge. I have also noticed somewhat poor fuel mileage. I got roughly 200 miles on 4 gallons! I should be able to stretch it a bit more than that. Even flogging it I figured I would be around 60mpg.

Does this sound like the cdi controller issue?

With carbs working properly, my daughter gets high 60s in normal, fairly conservative riding. She's small. Try a conservative tankful and see what you get.

I am near Charlotte I travel back and forth to work. I probably ride it a bit harder than most though. And I do spend a little bit of time in traffic when I get close to work. Near Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Well so far I have not seen any improvement in fuel mileage. I had a slight drop on the last tank I only managed 48.8mpg. This was just after installing new brake pads though and they were a bit tight at first took a day or two to wear them in. I also went ahead and pulled the chain off the bike to give it a very thorough cleaning and lubing job. We will see tomorrow how it affects my mileage. The one thing staying constant is me at roughly 175-178 pounds in gear with a backpack. I have not altered my riding style at all. I ride pretty much full on when I am able and otherwise I stay steady speeds on the two way roads I travel.

The tach is absolutely way off. At 60 gps indicated and oddly enough my speedometer reads correctly within 1mph of the gps I am nearly 9k on the tach. 70mph pushes it to almost 11k. So I am guessing either the tach is busted or my cdi signal is funky. I may try another cdi soon.
