A Piaggio NRG like one stolen


POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a rider was repeatedly punched in the head by thieves who made off with his scooter.

The 26-year-old victim was at a traffic light junction in Brighton at 1am on Thursday when two men approached, one on from either side. One then punched him until he fell off his Piaggio NRG before both thieves rode off on it.

The robbery happened close to a bus stop on a slip road leading from Old Steine to North Street, a junction with traffic lights. Police believe the two thieves may have been waiting at the junction before the attack.

The victim, from the nearby village of Rottingdean, was left badly shaken but escaped with bruising thanks to his helmet, the force said.

The thieves rode across a green, Steine Gardens, towards St James’s Street, and are believed to have crashed the scooter before getting back on.

The Piaggio NRG is red with the registration number GX07CRF. The thieves are described as white, tall and slim, and were wearing jumpers.

Detective Sergeant Steve French said: "The victim thankfully received only minor injuries but is very shaken.

"We believe the thieves may have been waiting at the bottom of North Street before attacking him and I'm keen to speak to anyone who saw them there.

"The men rode across the Steine without helmets. We think at some stage they crashed the scooter, got back on and rode off.

"Did you see any incident like this or two men who fit the description of the thieves? Please contact us if you saw or heard anything."
