Old bike, new rider

Hey everyone, I just recently purchased my first bike, an '05 ninja 250 and I love it. Sure it needs a few things, but for 700 bucks as long as it runs who cares right? So the first thing I want to do is get rid of the rear fender, and I was looking for some advice.

First, do you cut it off at the bottom of the rear fairing or remove it completely? I've had the carbs out so i see how it all goes together, just wondering if the portion that's under the seat protects anything specifically.

Second, it's legal where I am to have red rear blinkers, but is there somewhere that sells amber lenses that fit in the pods on either side of the brake light? I'd prefer them to be amber, seems to me like people would notice them more.

And lastly, what do you do for a license plate light? I've seen people on the internet knock out that piece of plastic on the bottom of the brake light, but wouldn't water be able to get in there?

Thanks for any help I get, the fender delete is first on a pretty long list, but I figured I'd start easy and go from there.

Welcome Tylor!

Gratz one the bike, the part under the seat is the airbox, it serves a purpose. If you get rid of it, you will need pod filters.

As far as the light, my friend uses small led strips. Waterproof and can be stuck just about anywhere.

Good luck!

And if you modify the air intake system, rejetting the carbs is probably necessary.

I tried using the right and left sections of my tail light as turn signals, but was not happy with the visibility, so I wired their lights to come on with the brake and added some amber LED signals. In my state, the tail light sections are too close to the brake section to be legal for turn signals as well.

Yes, if you open the hole in the tail light, you need to glue some clear plastic over it. I tried that, but was not happy with my license plate illumination, so I went with a separate LED for it. I like to keep things relatively legal looking to avoid unexpected stops from the police.

Welcome to the board, Tyler.

I realize where the air box is, I'm talking about directly behind that, a good portion of the fender is under the seat it looks like, I was just curious if it protected anything.

Thanks for the warm welcomes

A lot of people remove the entire fender and have no issues. I don't think it protects anything major but you are allowing dirt, debris, mud etc to get up in that area. I've seen people fabricate a cover for underneath there. But like I said, most people remove the rear fender completely and have that hole. Never heard of any issues it's caused, other than maybe an occasional mess if you ride over something wet and muddy.
