Bike dies with choke after not storing properly...

Hi guys, hopefully someone can help me with this.
I didn't winterize my ninja properly last fall (classic), hoping that my dad would run it from time to time to charge the battery and keep the fluids flowing. The battery died, however, so the bike ended up sitting for about 8 months. I can start it now, and it will run, but only with no choke. It idles quite high (around 3500 rpm) and the rpm will drop with only a very small amount of choke, and the bike dies with any substantial amount of choke. I've tried adjusting the idle screw, but I can't seem to get the idle rpm to less than about 3500. I've been running some seafoam through it and it seems to have helped a little bit, but not much.
I put in new fuel, etc, so I don't think the problem is rotten fuel. I'm not sure if it's the carbs either, because it runs fine with no choke and doesn't die when I give it throttle.
Sorry about the long post, but any help would be appreciated!!
thanks

How long was it running before you started to fiddle with it? Give it time, and perhaps the dirt will be flushed by the new clean fuel.
