Here are some current pics. Sorry for the messy garage, lots of goodies going to donation...

My Cannondale M400
I just installed my Polar CS200 on it that was on my Trek. I also plan on putting knobbies back on this thing.

My wife's Specialized Globe (which I've been using more than her lately)

Diamondback ViperX

And my baby, Trek 1.5...on the $30 trainer. Hey, it is cold out there. lol
Just installed a CatEye Double Wireless computer (samples from the rear tire, good for the trainer)

I have been looking at the Trek 1.2 and the Specialized Allez. I really want to get into road bikes.

Just an FYI when it comes to the Trek 1.2. The shifters cannot be shifted if on the lower bar. You have to be up on the horns to shift it properly. Joy of the Sora Shifters.

See the little lever on the inside of the horn?

You can ONLY reach that from up top. So if you ever want to do anything aggressive, you have to move your hands off the lower bar to make a shift. Not good IMHO.

Now the 1.5, which is a little more, offers better shifters.

This style shifter, the Tiagra, is similar to what is offered on high end bikes. You can shift from on the horn, or down on the lower bar. It is more flexible, which is why many opt to get the 1.5 over the 1.2.

Several people get the 1.2 and are totally happy with it.

I will warn you though, the stock Bontrager seat sux!!! I went with a high end specialized piece and I love it. 4 1/2 hours of saddle time is nothing now. Before I'd only last 2 hours and I was done.

(EDIT: sorry if I made the post sound like I'm talking to a newb, I know you aren't)

you can reach the Sora thumb shift from the drops if you do not have small hands - but otherwise you are correct. I have Sora shifters on my otherwise 105 equipped bike - mostly because the options for 8spd rear cassette shifters for reasonable prices = Sora.

Thanks for the advice Mark. Since I'm not a roadie, I don't know these things. I appreciate you taking the time to explain it.

Man, I tried from the drops and I couldn't reach them easily. Hence why I went with the 1.5's Tiagra shifters. I tried reaching them from the drops. I guess I stated unable to reach them because I feel if I have to move my hand, then they are out of reach. I'm stubborn like that.

i ride 80% on the hoods so I don't have to reach them often from the drop, but when i am sprinting and need to, I can. They are indeed an interiem solution though. In time I will definately go to a higher end STI for just that purpose.

I like the 8Sp Sora shifters. They are smooth shifting and are exceptionally reliable. I got a Sora Grouppo for my Univega Comp. It` a great marriage.

I think I am gonna take the plunge and sign up for RAIN (Ride Across Indiana). Its 160 mile trip from west to east all the way across the state, 7am to 9pm. Maybe I am crazy but it would give me something to train for specifically. Anyone do anything like this?

I have a Swobo Sanchez fixed gear. Fixies are so much fun and it's killer exercise.

I also have a late-60s Sears Spyder rat bike. The crank is so short it's impractical for any kind of hill but it's a cool looking ride that I get tons of compliments on.

You bet! Did The Trek Across Maine five years in a row. 186mi. Helps a lot in training when you have a goal. Keep a log of your miles and times. It will help you fine tune the training. Good luck--you can do it.

Neil, You have a beautiful bike and a great wife---or a beautiful wife and a great bike--whatever. Do Enjoy. You will love the 105 Grouppo. If you are into modding, get a pair of Jockey wheels with bearings for your rear derailleur (about $35) and you have the smoothness of D-A. Ride the stock 105 for a while. Then, when you make the change, you will swear you got a new Gruoppo.

Very nice bike Neil!!!

I need to drop my cycle by the LBS to get inspected before the MS150. So it looks like I will be cruising on my fixie this week. Hopefully they will have it back to me very soon. I'm kind of protective of my Trek 1.5.

THANKS!!!

As I mentioned before Kathi is far better to me than I deserve. I have had an opportunity to put about 65 miles on the new bike between Mon and Tues and really like it. Still taking some getting used to but that will take a little bit of time on any bike.

I have looked up that jockey wheel mod, putting sealed bearing wheels in, is there a better brand to get or just get Shimano ones (I think I have seen SRAM and Tacx or something).

And thanks for the encouragement for the RAIN. I put on about 260 miles in Feb and 320 miles this month. April has about 550 scheduled, I am looking forward to it.

Neil, They are all good. Shop for price. Best wishes for a good ride. You can definitely do it. I can do it at age 69. You would do it without breathing hard. I am now training for a 450miler run in August.

I registered for a local ride here in town. It supports a high school band. Since I'm a former band geek, I couldn't resist. So that will be this Saturday. I did a 46 mile ride yesterday, we maxed out at a sustained 22mph for at least 15 minutes, but averaged 17mph with some climbs, headwind, and stops for lights.

The ride this next weekend (April 10) will be a 35 mile ride and relatively flat. I was going to do the 65 mile route, but I wanted a "relaxed" ride before my 2-day, 185 mile, ride to Austin.

Neil, have any more chances to go riding on that fancy new steed?

After that, I'll be training for my first Century ride in North Texas called "Hotter'N Hell Hundred". It is in mid-August. It will be hot, but should be fun.

I did quite a lot of mountain biking before I got my Ninja. In 2008 I mostly did 8+ hours a week. Last year I kinda neglected that hobby though in favor of my motorcycle, but I'm aiming to do more again this year. Don't have any pics of my bike - it's not really pic-worthy as it's a just a no-brand frame with Shimano stuff. And it's mostly covered in dirt.

Btw, my 3rd set of tires on my mountain-bike are from IRC, same brand as my stock Ninja tires, and they're actually very decent. They were a lot cheaper than the high quality tires from Schwalbe I used before, have much lower rolling resistance, nearly as much grip, but way way better wear lifespan.

By the way, do any of you cyclists have problems getting comfortable in motorcycle pants (leathers or otherwise)?

When I train a lot and my legs get more muscular, my motorcycling pants (touring-style, textile) sometimes give me cramps at the back of my knees. I try to keep relaxed while riding, but I still flex a little bit now and then, and then my pants don't offer enough room around my knees. I didn't have this problem during the winter when I quit cycling and only went on walks for a few months, but now that I'm getting more active mountain biking again, I feel those trousers giving me slight cramps again.

I'm planning to get a proper leather suit this season. I've read that high quality leathers should stretch a bit. How much do they stretch?

Sharky,

Absolutely do the RAIN. It's a great event, and has a pretty cool jersey almost every year (this year's is particularly badass, imo - http://www.bloomingtonbicycleclub.or.../rain.html#jer).

Illinois in the morning, Ohio that night - can't beat it! The other nice thing about the ride is that there is a fair number of riders, so you can usually find a paceline that fits your speed. That helps a ton, allows you to conserve energy early in the day so you're more fresh from mile 100 on. Training tip for RAIN - think of it as two rides - a century and a metric. Once you knock out the century, then it's just a metric to the finish. And once you find you have plenty of time to knock out that metric, you can relax and not worry about the clock.

My goal for riders trying RAIN for the first time: Be able to do a century in 8-9 hours without being totally wiped. If you can do that by say, mid-June, you are golden!

Yeah, I put around 100 miles on her last week. Surprisingly the new Trek is not that much better than my '91 C'dale - at least as far as hauling butt goes. I mean, the new 105 is definitely lighter, snappier, and more precise than the old 105; and the 10spd cassette does offer alot more flexibility. But I think the old 3.0 Crit frame does a better job of converting my effort into speed. It feels like very little is wasted on the C'dale; my legs push and it goes.

However, the Trek is about 1.5lbs lighter (19lbs vs 20.5lbs with pedals, cages, bottles, computer, and bags -the only way I have ever weight both of them) and infinitely more comfortable (minus the saddle which is taking some time to get used to). The new bike just seems to drain me less over a couple of hours of riding. Its not as twitchy and manic, and its smoother, vibrates less, and is just more relaxed - which makes for a better overall ride.

Yeah, I am pretty excited about it. I know right now I can do a century in 8 hours without being completely wasted, but never 160 in the middle of July heat. I have an overall target time of 10 hours for my first RAIN, not sure if its gonna happen but thats what I am training for.

I did a 35 mile ride early last week at 18.6 mph avg, 300-400 feet of climing through rolling hills with 15-20 mph winds in my face, got onto a relatively flat section with some wind coverage, went to the drops and stroked her out to 27-28 mph for a good bit, maybe 2 or 3 miles, and rolled into a slight downhill sprint. Couldn't muster enough leg to break 40 mph while in the saddle, and didn't want to get up. Good enough for a personal best of 39.7 mph, not good enough to get up any faster. Recovery spun myself out the last 10 miles or so. Cycling is fun - and my legs hurt.

The stock Trek Bontrager R1 Saddle is worthless. You will NEVER get used to it. I pitched it for a Specialized Phenom Team Saddle. It isn't a Brooks, but it is a decent saddle. Leaps and bounds over the stock Bontrager piece.

Well I say it is worthless because I have a Trek 1.5, I hated the seat and upgraded.

A co-worker of mine has a Trek 1.5, same thing.

My cousin and his wife both purchased Trek 1.5's for the MS150, and they both hated it. They asked me for recommended upgrades. lol

So I know it isn't just me.

Try taking the saddle off the Cannondale and putting it on the Trek. All six of my bikes have the same saddle. They are also set up the same in terms of saddle height, stem height and reach, and so on. Makes life easier.

I set all my contact points as close as I could to the C'dale. I really like the way the white seat looks on the Trek so I think I just need to get a white version of the saddle on the other bike.

I went on a ride the other day, and it was into a 30 mph headwind with 45 mph gusts the ENTIRE WAY. It was miserable. Flat miserable. Honestly went to the granny gear and spun my way to an average speed 6 mph slower than a normal trip around that distance. And my quads still felt like they were going to explode.

That means you had a great ride!!!

Yeah, I liked the white saddle on my trek, but I swapped it for a black one. Black wears better than white.

Not a 250 owner yet, but plan to be within a week or 2. My bicycle is a 1973 Atala Giro D'Italia. No pics, needs to be rebuilt anyways. Great bike though.

Rode with a couple of guys Sat that were much better than I am. A real eye opener for sure. They were cool about it and when they dropped me, they eventually slowed down and picked me back up. Very fast guys though. I could only stay with them when I got in the slipstream. It was nuts, they could just power out high 20s all day long.
