[visordown.com] - Driver appeals twoyear driving ban for causing motorcyclists death

The junction where the collision took place

A WOMAN who caused a motorcyclist's death by careless driving is appealing to have her two-year ban from the roads reduced.

Maureen Haller, 58, was driving a black Audi which collided with motorcyclist and father-of-two Matthew Thompson on Februay 16 last year.

Aprilia rider Thompson, 32, died in hospital from injuries sustained in the collision, which happened at a junction on the A149 at Castle Rising, Norfolk.

Haller pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and was banned from the roads for two years at King's Lynn Magistrates Court on May 12 this year. She was also ordered to serve a 120-hour community service order within 12 months.

Her appeal against the length of the driving ban is due to be heard tomorrow.

The family of Thompson, from Wimbotsham, are calling for a law change making a two-year ban the minimum for causing death by driving and have launched a petition which they hope to present to the Court of Appeal on Friday.

A statement from the family said: 'We would like to change the law so that anyone found guilty of causing death by driving is given a mandatory loss of licence for a minimum of two years before they can re-sit a test and also have to take a driver’s awareness course as a minimum sentence.'

Find the online petition here and the family's Facebook campaign page here.

Causing death by careless driving carries a maximum five-year prison sentence.

The Motorcycle Action Group is planning demonstration rides in nine UK cities over what it sees as unacceptably lenient sentences for drivers who kill motorcyclists.
