Robbed of $400 in daylight
Not really but, I had my 7500 miles valve check/adjustment maintenance done and the mechanic came back saying everything was within spec. In the back of my mind, I'm wondering if he really did or not! I left the bike in the night prior and pick it up the next day and I couldn't go in the middle of the day to check due to distance. This is a reputable place according to online reviews but still...
Oh well.

I'm confused a bit (could be I just got to work in this very hot, hazy and humid morning). Did he charge you $400 for the inspection? Or you threw that up there to get attention?

Yes, $400 was the charge to do the inspection.

Might be an ignorant thing to say but I don't think I'd pay $400 just for someone to 'check'.

I would be extremely pissed! Did he/they give you a break down of the charges? Some of that probably came from overnight storage as well.

That price is a bit high IMO. My dealer here charges $275 and it includes shims if needed. Or at least that's what they told me over the phone. I ended up doing it myself.

I've called the two Kawasaki dealers in my area and both charge in the $500+. Living in Northern VA sucks coz everything is just expensive. Isn't it true that you have to do everything else except the actual valve adjustment or shims, if needed, when 'checking' for the valve clearance?

No, to a point.
You still have to disassemble the bike to a point where you can get the valve cover off, however....at that point you can check the tolerances. If you have to change the shims, there is A LOT more work to do. |

I guess I've been really robbed!!! When I initially talked to the mechanic on the phone he said the initial labor to check is $400 and then I'll pay extra for shims if needed.

$400 is kawi recommended service hours/price and includes the entire kit and kaboodle not just valve adjust. its what happens when you go to a dealer.

Holy damn! I would never pay $400 to have my valves adjusted! Pick up a service manual and the proper tools. If that's what it costs to have your bike worked on, the tools and knowledge gained will pay for itself before you realize it.

i paid 260 for my 6k full service which included oil change, valve adjustment, coolant flush and an overall visual inspection. But thats the great thing about living in swmo everything is fairly cheap here

It also helps that the pregen adjustment isn't nearly as labor-intensive. The shim-under-bucket valves in the newgen make a huge difference in cost. I've seen mechanics state in no uncertain terms that this change was made at the request of dealers complaining about the low-margin bike that was taking an increasingly large chunk of their sales year after year.

if i remember right mine were done around 8k and it was $162. they said they were in spec though so maybe it would have been more if they needed to adjust.

Exactly. Measuring isn't nearly as intensive as adjusting, which requires measuring again and a lot of additional labor.
