That sounds very wrong ... you are probably wearing the chain out much faster with the wrong link pitch sprocket.

+1/-2 for me I like this combo due to the speeds that go through the twisties I'm right in the power band.

It's a brand new chain as well.

Please explain how a larger sprocket could wear out a chain.

It sounds wrong because a larger sprocket with 45 teeth (same as stock) would have a different pitch between the teeth. Therefor, improperly sized against a stock pitched chain. This is why the number of teeth increase when the physical diameter of the sprocket is larger, vice versa for smaller sprockets.

Bottom line, you're gunna wear out the chain, sprocket or both. Also, it will cause premature wear on your front sprocket as well. Any chance it has more teeth than 45 and you mistyped what you meant? It's easy to check, JT sprockets stamps the number of teeth right on the sprocket. Look for a 40 something number etched into the metal.

Oh, just wanted to let you know the standard pitch for a 250 chain is 520. Did you change yours? Some riders do this as a weight savings mod. If you changed your pitch to non-stock, this could explain why we are alerting you of a possible issue. Because we are assuming stock sizing.

Let's see, went up one in the front to a 15T and been cruising on it for several months now. Love that I keep "forgetting" to go up into 6th as 5th feels like normal.

Just ordered a 42T to try for my long rides to eek out a bit more mileage. If it comes in tomorrow, will have it installed with my new tires and tested this weekend.

Ordered JT steel sprockets from the dealer first, and now through Amazon.

would say favorite sprocket mod but I was in need of new chain so figured I'd do sprockets to keep everthing wearing together.

I ordered a fancy rear sprocket with stock 45t. They said it would take a week to make it but they did have 43t in stock. 2 weeks later I said I'm tired of waiting give me the damn 43t

Today was the first day I really got to feel it out. Not sure if I like it better or not yet? I can tell a difference even with just a few teeth down in the rear mainly with my shifting.

I'm not getting out of 5th as much as I can wring it out just that little bit more. Will see how it continues to play out. I'm stuck with this setup for a while. I paid too much to go back

Exclamation 2¢ on gears

One must keep in mind that gear it down, decreasing the final gear ratio, that small displacement engines love and need to rev to work effectively, so if you go too far, be ready for that.
I know that when I had my FJ1100 GOING to +1/-2 was no big deal, and I could hardly feel the performance difference, but on the 250 I can feel it for sure.

HELL it's simple math, rear sprocket divide by front sprocket= final ratio

43/15=2.86 see isn't that much easier.

Right, but that's not the intention ... Go gps your bike, and then use the form, and see if they match up ... mine was off by 10% ... so I altered the final ratio as a quick way to play with the sprocket numbers accurately. Maybe the 2008+ data is more accurate than the -2007 data.

I have stock at the moment, but hope to get my 15T front sprocket on before the season ends here. First bike, and I've only had it for a month, but I think by now I'll be able to tell if it makes a difference.

Not having to shift when making a left turn would be kind of awesome.

Gearing

When I bought the bike I switched from 14/45 to 15/41 because I did more highway traveling than anything else and wanted gas mileage and lower revs at 70 mph. The 15/41 is fine accelerates well but I find I cannot max out RPM in 6th gear GPS'd at 93 mph. Think the 15/43 might have been best all arounder gearing.

A stock bike can't max out 6th (125 mph lol) with regular sprockets either, or 5th @ 111 mph. 93 gps'd is not too far off. My older pregen is 91 mph 4th with 15/42, no lead vehicle cutting the wind.

On my 09 stunt bike I'm using 13/52 that's was to get out as much torque as I can out of it to pop wheelies easier

I've been riding the 14t/43t combo for a little bit now. I think I like it. I can definitely tell a difference more so in my shift points as I mentioned earlier, nothing on the butt dyno though. The other day on a long straight up hill on the highway the bike pulled to 93 indicated in 6th, (little bit of a tail wind). With the stock gearing I don't think it would have gone any faster.

43t in the back seems like a good option for people who want to drop the revs just a bit but keep the little bit of get up and go that the bike has.

I'm new to riding and all this gear ratio info, I see the numbers diff on gear commander's site... I see a lot of people saying that 15/42 is great, I was thinking of going 14/42. Would there be a noticeable difference by keeping the front sprocket stock?

Hi John,

Will you notice? Sure but "how much" you notice is the debateable thing. Many riders think the 250 is buzzy at 65-75mph and the 15t front sprocket helps with that by lowering the rpms in that speed range. Ie... it's a calmer feeling ride overall.

You have to address yourself to gauge the value and impact on the bike's performance. I lump everything into 2 categories;

Will it help keep me safe - can I decel and accel in a manner that works with my riding
Will it improve performance - subjective to riding style and personal preferences

First off if you're a heavy rider, the 15/42 will suck at the top end. 85-90'ish mph will be your max speed. Will that work for you?
Do you mostly do alot of downtown city riding?
Do you mostly ride highway?
Do you mostly ride twisties for fun?
Do you want more acceleration vs. top end speed (it takes a long distance to see top end speeds on 250's).

I guess... the major question is "why are you considering modifying the gearing?" If you answer this, we can help you in a better way.

Yes - you'd be $30 poorer. Going up to 15 tooth in the front (and keeping the 45 in the back) will provide you exactly the same gearing as a 14/42. But a 15 tooth front is much cheaper than a 42 tooth rear.

Thanks! Sadly it is time for me to replace my rear sprocket and chain, the teeth are starting to fish hook

Ah! Got it. If you need to replace it anyway, makes sense to choose the gearing you'd prefer at that point. But if one sprocket is toast, the other one is relatively worn as well, right?

^^^ should be. Same with the chain. Typically I replace them as a set on both motorcycle and bicycles.

Sprockets and chains wear together. Replace them together. Extent of condition.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

I was looking for more top end with minimized loss to acceleration...

Sadly everything has a price. I ride a bit of everything but use my bike as my daily commuter with 2/3 being highway and a third being city. Sometime on my way home I take the scenic route and run down HWY 1 through Stinson Beach to SF. Realized that I'll just need to make more money and have several bikes for all sorts of my moods...

Go with 15T up front, it's about the easiest way to go. These bike love/need to rev, if you gear it down too much, it will suffer, and you'll be unhappy with it.

I myself went 15/43 which was I think too much, next time I'll go back to 45 but keep the 15

15/43= 2.87 final ratio
15/45= 3.00 final ratio
14/45= 3.22 final ratio(OEM)

While this might not seem as much, to the Ninjette it is.

Hey it's all good, try out the ones you order, you just might like it, worse case scenario, you order the 45.
