Offset keyway ignition advance question

Anyone done the ignition advance offset key way on a 88-07 ninja 250 from Factory Pro? I am reading the instructions and it says the offset needs to be to the right. I believe the motor spins counter clock wise, so wouldn't having the offset to the right of the key way slot be retarding the timing? Any help is appreciated I only have one generator cover gasket and want it on correct the first time.

Are you talking about using an offset key, or cutting the keyway on the flywheel wider? Anything that doesn't let the engine turn as far before the spark happens will advance the timing, so if you cut the keyway in the flywheel "to the right", it will be rotated on the crankshaft counterclockwise from stock, causing more advanced timing. Then if you cut the keyway wider you'd have to either use a key with a wide half, or trust friction to keep the flywheel in the right place.

Of course if you remove the flywheel and look at the keyway, that "to the right" becomes "to the left".

Using the kit purchased from Factory Pro using the offset key way.

I'm not familiar with that kit, but as long as you position the flywheel more counterclockwise relative to the crankshaft than stock, the spark timing will be more advanced.

Do these engines spin clockwise or counter clockwise

They follow the standard of turning the same way as the wheels.

So counter clockwise. Wouldn't putting the key way offset to the right moving the flywheel according to the instructions be retarding the timing?

Yes, want key to left to advance timing.

Factory Pro messes up A LOT. Such as sending pre-gen needles with their new-gen jet kits, wrong-sized jets, etc.

Why do you think they call dyslexia "the silent killer"?

I will remember this "disorder" name when I need to find an excuse for my wife on why I was away riding for so long.
