Hello, from Northern CA!

New rider here! Took the class but still need to take the written but have been practicing here and here in the backroads around my neighborhood. I have a 2009 Ninja 250 that I actually had to take apart and fix a little and have been using this forum for info on my bike and finally signed up to be a member. Yay my first time signing up for a forum!

Welcome.

What class did you take? The MSF requires a permit in my area. So you have to take a written test before the classes.

California Motorcyclist Safety Program

It's a 3 day class that teaches you in the classroom as well as outside on bikes. At the end they evaluate you and if you pass it counts towards you behind the wheel. You can take the written test before or after taking the class.

It's interesting to see the different requirements for each state!
I took the MSF, which cost $20 in my state (you get it back if you complete the course, so it's free basically, and no permit needed) and if you pass the riding & written at the end of it, they give you a certificate to take to the DMV so you can get your license!

Where did you take the class? Some of the folks I ride with occasionally are MSF (and now CSMP) instructors here in northern california.

Welcome! Yeah, here in CA you can take the class whether you've passed the written test or not yet. If you take the test, you can get your permit and ride (with conditions) for a year.

Glad you enjoyed the class! I took it, too, and they had a lot of great info and it gave me a lot of confidence.

somewhat related question:
when you move to a different state, will everything transfer onto your new license? Ie., you wouldn't have to retake the motorcycle class/tests, right?

Might have to retake the written test in a new state.

Virginia has the Virginia Rider Training Program, courses are offered by many community colleges and private companies. Cost varies from $150-$450 and you don't get anything back.

Same thing, when you pass the skills test and written test you get a certificate to take to DMV and get your license.

You can alternately take the written test at DMV, practice for 30 days, then take the riding test, which is only offered at select DMV locations.

VA does have one strange part to the Motorcycle License law. If you are under 19 years old you must hold a permit for 9 months before you can get your license. While you have your learners permit you must ride with another licensed rider over the age of 21. My 17 year old daughter has been riding for 9 months now, hasn't gone back to DMV to get her license yet so she has to ride with myself or her older brother, who just took his class a week ago and is not as good of a rider as she is.

Depends upon the state. Most will accept another states license and issue you one of theirs. However I know VA will not accept another states training course, so if you took the training course in your old state but did not get a license issued to you, then you must take the VA course.
