[motorcycle.com] - Piaggios eSR1 Trademark Filing Hints at an Electric Aprilia Scoote

A new trademark filing for an “eSR1” logo may suggest an electric Aprilia scooter is on the way. The Aprilia eSR1 will likely share technology with another member of the Piaggio family, the Vespa Elettrica scooter.

The European Union Intellectual Property Office published the trademark application today, showing a logo with “eSR1” in a stylized font. The trademark’s applicant hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s clear the filing was made by the Piaggio Group.

The obvious clue is that the “SR” portion of the trademark matches the SR logo Piaggio currently uses on the Aprilia SR line of scooters. Here is the eSR1 logo with the logo for SR-GP Replica which Aprilia released last year:

The other clue is that the trademark application was filed on the owner’s behalf by Jacobacci & Partners S.P.A., the Italian law firm that handles Piaggio’s intellectual property matters.

The Aprilia SR-GP Replica was a special edition SR 50 styled after its 2019 RS-GP MotoGP racebike’s livery.

Aprilia currently produces SR models in 50, 125, 150 and 160cc displacements in various markets, but the brand hasn’t entered the electric space yet. Parent company Piaggio, however, has a proven electric scooter already on the market in the Vespa Elettrica.

The Vespa Elettrica.

Piaggio already shares its scooter technology among its brands, so it doesn’t take much of a leap to imagine the Elettrica’s electric motor and batteries repackaged for an Aprilia eSR1.

Trademark filings don’t usually provide a strong indication on when (or even, if) a finished product will come to market. If the eSR1 shares its technology with the Elettrica, then a lot of the development would have been completed before the project started. The fact that Piaggio filed a logo, or “wordmark”, suggests that the eSR1 is much closer to production than if the filing were for just the name as plain text.

As such, we can probably expect to see the Aprilia eSR1 revealed very soon.
