My place burned !
So I was without power or water for a week after sandy hit. The day after I get power back my landlords space heater caught fire and burned the place down.
After I got my landlord out and the people in the other two rooms outside what did I go back to save ? Tell me your best guess? |

WOW what an unbelieveable run of bad luck You're a hero for making sure that your landlord and other tenants were able to get out ok As for what you went back in for...my first guess would be a pet (pretty much the only thing I'd go back for, well other than people...most people anyway!!) so in lieu of a pet, must have been the bike!! Glad you're ok, possessions can be replaced, hope your situation takes a change for the better pronto!!

Yeah it was not so good. My landlord is in his late sixties and he was trying to put it out. It flashed up super quick and the smoke was making him disoriented . I had to scream at him to leave with me and guide him out. My housemates slept through the first few shouts to call 911. I sent my girlfriend to wake them while I got rob out.
Then I ran back in and threw all my ridding gear out the second floor window and I had to climb down the fire escape because the hallway was getting burned from above. We had to go and get rob when he tried to go back in to save his house. After he came to his senses he thanked us. He is still sick from the smoke inhalation. It didn't get me as bad. Only later did I realise how stupid it was to try and save three old jackets and two helmets haha . My girl friend is a real trooper , she went totally nuts when I woke her up and told her the house is on fire. I grabbed her and told her " you will not panic ! Now go and wake everyone" she did and I went up stairs and got rob. I've never seen such thick smoke , I couldn't see him by the time he stopped resisting and we went out. |

The volunteer fire men were amazing ! They got it out right away in like two hours they were done . It only destroyed the top floor and three rooms on the second. But there is a lot of water damage everywhere

Wait, you threw helmets out the window? Wouldn't that make them basically useless now? lol
Sorry to hear about this though, you seem to have run into a horrible string of bad luck mate! Hopefully everything turns around for you soon and your life gets back into order! |

First and foremost, it is good everyone is alive and well.
Secondly, I thought the same thing about the helmets! But I feel like I could understand irrational want to save everything. |

Yeah I guess when panic set's in and you're like "OH **** MY HOUSE IS ON FIRE!!" you just start tossing everything you can reach out of windows! Good thing there weren't any children within reach, huh?

This truly and deeply sucks.
Big props to you for doing exactly the right things, in the right order. You stayed calm. You kept others calm. You took care of people. Few would be able to do that. It shows that you are a quality individual. What you said to your girlfriend is deeply impressive. Most of us would have been screaming, making the situation worse. Chucking stuff out the window at random is not stupid. It's just the kind of bizarre thing that happens under extreme stress. Stuff is not important. Survival is. You'll get more stuff. I can't even remember what I owned when I was your age. |

My deepest sympathies man. As everyone has said, calm wins in these situations. Stuff can be replaced and thank God no one was seriously injured.

My helmets are fine. One was in its box and the other was in its bag throw down into an armload of jackets. Not a scratch ....
The fire men pulled up to see as punch of people in their underwear and motorcycle jackets lol .... Lol my house mates gf s didn't even have pants! Lucky for them my gf had a fresh load of laundry in her car ! Pressure and fear make me focus , I'm not heroic - I'm a survivor .... But nothing beats planning so please everyone remember where fire extinguishers are and have a fire plan for you and your families . I probably could have put it. Out if I had known where the extinguisher was hidden in the kitchen. |

My move down to middle town has been been ****** . Moved down and stayed in a hotel while finding a place. Then moved in to a farm . The second month they asked me to move so their cousins could move in to my apartment. So I found this place the third month it burned.
I have been looking for houses in Sullivan county or nearby ... Found a real nice one but the realtor said its under contract. So I am deciding what to do now ???? Sleeping on a cot in my office is getting lamer by the min. |

So glad you're alright!
My mom once left a lit cigarette in a trashcan and the fire ate a quarter of our attic. The water damage in the rest of the house was the worst part, though. Even with confined fires, the water is what usually totals the building. Luckily we just got to hook up some big fans to holes in the walls to dry it all out. My mom and stepdad shot hoses up through the back window to keep it at bay. The firefighters said it was the only thing that kept the fire from taking the whole attic before we got there. I think the first thing I'd think about saving is my cat, pictures of my mimi, my art, and then my external hard drive, which has all of my digital art on it. |
