Wear earplugs all the time, every ride. The difference they make is very substantial. I'm convinced if anyone who rides without them were to try using them, they would never go back to not wearing them.

When you pull your helmet over your head, the lining/padding doesn't pull the earbud out? What is wrong with my anatomy? I don't have large ears, quite the opposite in fact, so I cannot understand how I am unable to pull my helmet over my head and keep the buds stuck in there. WTF?

And yes, I know I am hurting my hearing. It's already trash, but the ringing is definitely a warning that I am doing more damage. I just dug my swimming earplugs out of my gym bag. I will ride with those in tomorrow and see how it feels.

Depends what earbuds you use I guess...the Apple earbuds completely suck...so those will fall out easily; however, with my skull candy ones, they go in my ear and stay in pretty well. Putting the helmet on will occasionally loosen them or try to pull them out, but I just stick my hand up in the helmet and push them back in & fasten the helmet.

I tried a pair of skull candy buds a while back and they naturally fell out of my ears without any outside influence. Maybe I'll try another pair out. Thanks.

The little rubber piece may have been too small, which it usually comes with like 3 different sized rubber pieces. That and the different types they make will probably have differing ear bud shapes. But good luck!

Do you wear earplugs?

Do you guys wear earplugs when you ride? I don't but I'm starting to think I should, especially at the track.

Alex...can you make this a poll?

Alex, I tried to make this into a poll w/ the options: always, sometimes, never, but something went wrong. Can you add one for me?

Maybe at the track. but for every day riding the ninja 250 isnt hardly loud enough

EDIT: Maybe I don't because my computer speaker is a 4 foot tall amp set to play the pandora station 'Dubstep'. My ears are already far gone

Hi Ally! I merged it with our mongo earplug thread, and added a poll at the top as well.

I wear them for every ride. It's one of those things that once you get in the habit of, you'll wonder how you ever did without.

Cool! Thanks! Missed that one when I searched.

I've tried it a couple of times with earplugs, and I don't like it. The sounds are too muffled. But I know it's important, so I'm going to give it a go again and see if I can get used to them at Road Atlanta next weekend. Thanks!

BTW, like your choices better than mine! Especially the "what?" LOL!

always, every ride. My helmet (arai RX-Q) is obnoxiously loud without them. I honestly think it's louder than not wearing a helmet. Plugs are a necessity for me.

i get foam ones free from work, and just cut them in half so that I don't pull them out when I put my helmet on.

The exhaust noise has nothing to do with this. Unless you're riding a big twin with open headers, or perhaps a MotoGP bike, the exhaust noise when you're at highway speed isn't going to be particularly damaging. The wind noise absolutely will. There isn't a helmet out there that is quiet enough to prevent hearing damage after a decent distance on the highway.

I use earplugs on every ride other than a trip down the street to fillup the bike at the gas station. Once you start riding with them, you'll kick yourself for not starting earlier. It makes riding that much calmer; the windnoise causes a bunch of stress that you don't notice until it's gone. It's less tiring. And it's orders of magnitude safer for your long-term hearing. Even for those who listen to music while riding, I've found that the best fidelity is with helmet speakers + earplugs. Blocks out the windnoise. If you just use earbuds, in most cases you have to turn the volume up to max for it to be usable on the highway. So you're blasting wind noise and music noise into your noggin.

We've always got a box of 200 pairs of E-A-R Classic yellow foamies in the garage, and we order a new one whenever it's looking a little low. $24.
I'm 22 I don't need ear protection!

No but really because of this post just bought myself 50 pair of the E-A-R Classics to try em out

If I'm doing distance or speed. I don't bother with them for short runs to the shops/work/gym but if I'm doing a decent mileage, motorway or misbehaving on the backroads I stick in a pair.

I do find that when I'm riding to the gas station without plugs, I can now hear some of the higher-pitched rattling or other unpleasant engine noises that are more muted with plugs. Put the plugs back in, and the engine sounds fine.

yes. Always. Try it. So much more peaceful to mute out some of that turbulent wind/intake/exhaust. Especially at the track where you're wide open and fast all day long.

plus I have good hearing since I'm 19. I enjoy music and I would like to be able to continue that hobby as I age. So earplugs it is!

Riding around town, no. Faster paced rides on the street and on the track, yes. If I forget to put them in at the track I ride slower. The wind noise messes with me and makes me think I'm going much faster than I am.

If you've never worm ear plugs on the track give them a shot.

I bought a big box of earplugs yesterday and I've been using them since, and I don't know how I did it before then. It's honestly the best thing ever. If I'm on a solo ride, I'm using ear plugs from now on.

Look for that variety pack that should still be linked near the top of this thread. Different people's ears prefer different sizes/shapes/materials of earplugs. If they cause any discomfort at all, keep trying different ones until they don't.

Also, make sure that the ones you use are completely inserted into the ear. It's not rocket science, but it's also not necessarily intuitive. They need to be rolled up quite tight with your finger before being able to be inserted all the way into the ear canal, and only then let them puff back up to full size. If they are not all the way in, they don't provide nearly the rated protection, and they can be distracting as they move around a bit more when not properly placed.

Sign me up for a big fat never! I don't like how muted everything is with them in. I've ridden listening to music and I'm less aware of my surroundings. With earplugs, idk, I just don't like them and I don't like having to put them in when I go ride.

Hopefully bionic ears will be available when my hearing goes out

I started using the type that needs to be rolled up; however, since my hands not always were clean, I suffered more than one ear infection.

Since then, I switched to the type that has an internal stem.
That stem serves to hold the plug while it is inserted.

I also soak them in salty water, which helps as a lubricant for inserting and as an anti-fungal agent.

I have reusables ones, that i first tried today, it made my exhaust louder at low speeds... but once i got up to speed there was little wind noise and the sound of the exhaust died down aswell, felt weird riding with them in though

Funny never occurred to me to wear ear plugs. I wear headphones on a long ride, but I only do that on the Goldwing. I don't get much wind noise since I'm covered head to toe. I only ride the Ninja to work and around town, so I won't bother on it. Now the Harley is another matter, it's kind of noisy (stock pipes though because I don't like loud bikes). I have a 300 mileish ride this weekend, I'll give the plugs a try see if that helps on the Harley.

I use Skullcandy earbuds or my Sound Logic bluetooth earbuds. Im on the road nearly 3 hours a day with my commute. Pandora takes the sting out boring freeway ride.

Always. I can't stand wind noise and wearing ear plugs actually helps me focus more and lessens fatigue.
