OMG!!!!! WTH!!!!!

I'm totally blown away!
I was 100% certain i was going to be riding the buell blast for my MSF class this week only to find out 2/3 of the way through the day that we would be riding the new harley street 500's, omg they actually look better in person than on a screen or in print. We only had class today and will get a chance to actually do the riding with them tomorrow and kinda stoked to try one out, and this will be the third class to ride these since getting them.

Figures that they would eventually replace the fleet. I guess that was a big reason for them to introduce this model.

You're actually taking the harley class, or is it the state subsidized MSF?

H-D's Rider'sEdge is an MSF BRC class and is certified in the states that recognize MSF BRC. Most states don't actually *subsidize* MSF BRC and some force you to take their own non-MSF state training program. I paid $280 for the weekday classes but it was over $300 for the weekend class.

In 2008 I took my H-D Rider'sEdge class on a Buell Blast then took the MSF BRC completion card and documents I received to the Georgia Department of Driver Services (formerly known as the GA DMV) to get my license. I did not have to re-test.

Yep, but the state subsidized class is $25 and they are usually full here in mi.

And they had **** bikes last time I took it here in our town, that's why I asked

Skullz and I are in the same town.

That cost is what finally got me to change my license over to Kentucky; it's ridiculous down there. I only paid $75 for an MSF course up here (though I did have to go to the DMV twice to get my license, once for a written test and once again a month later to get my actual license rather than just my permit.)

capt_bugaloo - Yes they have the funky orange nerf bars on them.

verboten1 - I am going to biker bob's class at the harley dealership and the class is $200 for my 5 hour per day, 5 day course which is actually pretty cheap considering your riding on their bikes and gas.
Granted i don't get to take it out on the road, i still get to ride and get a feel for what it is like and how it feels.

LittleRedNinjette - I am so glad they don't have the grom here cause i think i'd get kicked out of class for having some serious fun with that thing. lol

Try not to hate on the msf bikes too much. They make the ultimate sacrifice to help new riders into the world of 2 wheels on the open road.

We had a single Rebel 250 in my class; the rest of us got stuck on 125cc Kawi Eliminators! I actually still kind of want one to ride around town, though

Not hating too much, just wondering what rich ass community out there used buell and brand new harley's? (Can you hear the jealousy? ) and a 500 on top of that. Never heard of a msf class using anything bigger than a 250

The Buell Blast was made specifically as a beginner's bike. H-D commissioned it against Erik Buell's wishes. It was part of why they bought Buell, as I understand. It has no more HP than our Ninjas. They had none of the cool Buell tech, so they were unpopular even with Buell.

Cruiser gauges, standard styling, higher price, uncomfortable commuter (thumper w/ no windscreen) = unpopular

In short, they weren't anything to be jealous of!

It's an MSF class, but HD's Version, not the state subsidized class with the beaters...that I had a blast on!

It is costing me $200 for a 5 day course, which isn't so bad considering they're providing you with something to ride and practice on, so if you lay it down your nice bike isn't dinged.

verboten1 - It was not lisa but she knew who you were talking about though.

Well the bikes they have are really nice and stable with the exception to where the foot controls are for someone like me riding the ninja where everything is right below you, your feet are more in front and take a bit to get used to, but i really like this motorcycle. Got comfortable enough to drag the pegs on one exercise weaving through the cones and realised i better not lean this over as much as i do the ninja. lol

Ok, well i passed the MSF course and now licensed. w00t

Now about the bike.
It's a good training bike for beginners but has a really nasty drawback for those with short inseams, it is way to wide at the bottom when you have to duck walk the bike around for the first few exercises and your legs constantly hit the foot pegs.
Another nasty drawback is the really wide handle bars they have, but i'm certain it is meant for people who have never ridden a bike before to have as much leverage as possible for control, but control can come at a cost of too much extension of your arms trying to get it to maneuver around the course through the figure 8 and such.
The biggest thing that seems to hamper people are the lower crash bars on the bottom of the bike which will drag on the ground if you lean too much, and that can cause you to not want to lean as much as you would otherwise do during the more demanding exercises requiring you to lean while applying power. The last evaluation is where i got points for because i lifted off the power from fear of dragging the bars.

This thing can generate some damn heat!

All in all it is a good bike to ride around on and pretty comfortable to sit on but as i said it is really wide at the bottom, it handles really well and power is smooth and easy to apply without feeling like it is an on/off switch. I have no other reference to use as a comparison for with the bike other than my ninja which is completely different in many respects, and i think it is a good bike overall.

I am no expert and i suck at giving reviews, but it was an incredibly fun time taking the class and meeting others with the same interest.

Wow - cheap to get trained and certified over there. It cost me £666 (Over $1100) to get trained and get a license over here. It was a 5 day course. Gear, bike and petrol included. I had to do 3 practical tests and 2 computer based tests to get my license.

Yes: the total cost really did come to 666 pounds

I could have had my license for forty dollars.

20 for my permit and 20 for my license.

I went with MSF too, which was 275.

Other states have free MSF.
