I have one, made by hit-air

it's a large reason my neck isn't broken from a mid-speed (~70mph or so) head first highside landing

worth every penny

I like the one that Pathfinder used. Supposedly it bounced for kilometers...

While I think that could be a good Idea, I just know I would step off the bike and forget to detach the lanyard and POOF air bags inflate in front of your friends.

Although it does say 30-35 KG (or 66-77 lbs) of force on the pull cord to activate it, so that's quite a bit.

This has happened, though it is fairly uncommon. Typically it only happens when people jump off of their bike quickly. I have stepped off of my bike numerous times without realizing that I hadn't disconnected my tether and felt the tether become taut to know to disconnect it without having the vest go off

I keep seeing riders with one or another version of that vest. Sadly for me, but good news for them, none have been in a wreck with it to give me a review on how it works.

I did hear a few comment on forgetting to detached but the lanyard tugged before they got too far.

A few days ago, this rider collided with a deer at about 55 mph while wearing a Hit-Air MLV-P airbag vest.

Not only he put the vest to the test, but he lived to tell how it worked for him:

The only issue with the tether kind that I've seen is that it won't activate for a direct impact (I.E. hit by car) until you have separated from the bike.

Works perfectly for track or single vehicle crashes but I would look for something else that has a different trigger for street riding so it would work in that scenario

Interesting idea. I've seen a smaller one for bicycles, kind of a collar thing.

I've gone down twice on the track (low sides) and the vest deployed successfully each time, protecting my neck, back etc. Anything to improve your odds of safety is worth it in my opinion.

I have a Hit-Air race vest, and had one of their standard models for a while. Never deployed in anger, but I did fire the standard one on my porch railing. It takes a pretty good yank to fire it. I have doubts about the story of a "kid" pulling it, unless you're using that word to refer to some a**hole teenage football player.

For me, the neck bracing is the big feature. The neck roll interfaces with the bottom of your helmet to provide pretty good C-spine protection. Think Leatt brace without it getting in the way when you're not in a crash situation. Same with your collarbone and ribs - protection that's just not practical to have there all the time. Also adds a fair amount of extra protection for your spine (I use a CE2 back protector anyway).

My one gripe is that the standard models put the cylinder and firing mechanism too low. It's fine if you're riding a cruiser or dirtbike (and maybe on a touerer/standard, depending on your gastank), but if your seating position is at all sporty, it'll be banging into and scratching your tank. IMO, it should be higher up on the chest or kinda diagonally mounted on your side.

It's about $500, which costs substantially less than a trauma team activation in the Emergency Department .

There is a track-oriented version that addresses this. Since there ain't no such thing as a free lunch, the protection is slightly less in the rib area. To offset this, there is provision for an ample chest protector.

Yeah, that was for the others in the thread who appear to be unaware of these things.

Great idea. I wanted to up my protection this past season so it was either this or the race version of the Leatt brace, which is specifically designed for getting into a tuck. I found a used Leatt on ebay so went that way. I find it's really not noticeable when being worn on the track.
