Hurricane

With hurricane Irene nearing long island, and with the news telling me of impending 100mph winds and doom, I'm thinking I should find a way to bring the bikes in the house. Do you guys think thats anywhere near enough wind to push over or otherwise damage a 250 and a gsxr in a driveway? Keep in mind, bringing inside requires at least a few people for the gsxr, and involves stairs, and tight clearances. I've done it before, but it's not easy, and not the type of thing I'd like to do if I didn't have to. Opinions?

I know nothing of how much force these things have; but, would it hurt? It might be a PITA but in the end knowing your bikes are safe is worth it don't you think?

100 mph winds would easily knock over a bike. Winds down in the 40 - 50 mph range are enough to do it in the right conditions. I had my 600+ lb RT blow over 30 feet from me while parked near the ocean a few years back. There's nothing quite like that awful crunching sound.

My consern is trees falling into the house or garage. Plus I live in a flood zone. I have been working (with a broken rib) cleaning gutters and drains .Plus I re landscaped the yard. Eight inches of rain is bad news.Hopefully it will turn out to sea.But this is the most powerful storm to hit the East Ccoast since 1938. Get ready this is not a drill

I'm with ya! I'm way out east on the long island (Riverhead) I'm quite nervous about this!

I would definitely get them to a safe spot. Hurricane Gloria left most of LI with out power for 2 weeks in 1985. This one is supposed to be worse if it hits you dead on. They haven't had a really bad storm there since hurricane Bob in 91, or the blizzard of 96. I would expect some serious power outages if it hits hard. Be prepared for the worst!

Since it will be a pita to put the bikes in the house you might want to think about renting a storage space from a place such as U-Haul. They will probably make you sign a 6 month lease but it will be worth the peace of mind to know that your bikes are safe. If possible, make sure the facility is located inland as far as possible and at a high elevation to avoid flooding.

Get your wheelies in before the rain comes and batten down the hatches.
Good luck East Coast.

If you have full coverage on the bikes Id say dont risk hurting yourself or someone else trying to get them up the steps. Id say that six months of storage will probably cost the same as your deductable and doesnt really make much sense. You never know if the storm will affect your area or not. Just my opinion though.

Living in Florida you learn really quick that you dont worry as much about the wind, but worry more of what is being carried by the wind. Just think what will happen to that bike if its hit by a fence moving 100mph. Just something to think about.

EDIT: this is a video of a 2x4 being shot at different wall materials at 50mph

Both bikes are now inside, and as an added bonus, The ninjette is backed in, and pointing exhaust out the sliding glass door. It has a full tank of gas, and a DC outlet. I suspect I could charge my phone, laptop, E-cigg, etc for at least a week before I run out of gas! A 250cc generator!

Just read you bought them inside but....before the next one hits...go make friends with the VFD. They're all good guys and I'd bet you wouldve found a space for them there. I'm in Malverne and i dont expect more than a few lost shingles...all the really big trees have been blown down already.

Having lived on the Gulf of Mexico, and going through no less than 8 hurricanes. I can tell you MOST DEFINITELY MOVE THE BIKES INSIDE!

Its not just the potential of wind blowing them over....its the wind taking the shed from your neighbors backyard and flat running your bikes over with it.

If I wanted to make a few bucks i would goto the store here and buy 20 generators and head for the east coast. Bet I could double my money.

if youre going to use it as your generator make sure you put the bike outside and shut the door. carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the biggest killers post hurricane. and no, just opening the door isnt good enough.

And - these motorcycles do not have a cooling system meant for continuous idling. Works great while moving, but 10+ minutes while at a stop, and it is nudging the red zone.
