Gauge Problems? Check for corrosion
Hi everyone, I'm in the middle of restoring a 2010 SE and found that my tachometer wasn't working after getting the gauge cluster mounted again. Doing a little research, this appears to be a somewhat common problem but in my case, I was able to fix it. I took the gauge cluster out and removed the front cover. Inside, I removed the tachometer assembly after removing the screws on the back that hold the wires to the case. In the tach assembly, there are four screws that hold the tach motor to the circuit board and they were all slightly corroded. After cleaning them up with a bit of sandpaper (lightly), I put it all back together and it works fine! This is probably a bigger problem for owners that keep their bikes outside but it's a dissimilar metal corrosion issue so it could happen to anyone. Also, if anyone cares, you can replace all the incandescent bulbs with 194 type LED bulbs and it looks brilliant! I get mine at superbrightleds.com and used green for the backlight bulbs and then the correct color for each of the specific indicators. For the backlight bulbs, use the larger pattern 120 degree bulbs instead of the 90 degree bulbs for better light coverage.
