Who wears what for pants?

Just curious. Is it possible to get knee pucks that are seperate from the pants. So I could just strap them over existing pants/suits or is the only option to buy a pair with the pucks all ready sewed in?

I was just watching Revzilla review of those AGV pants today. I'd also like to get a review from someone who actually wears them.

Staying cool in the Memphis summer is what I'm most concerned with when shopping for pants. Right now I only have the Bilt Ironworker kevlar cargo pants. Really looking for something in Perforated leather.

The perf and keprotech scheme works with these pants. Yes they are warmer then textile/mesh overpants or riding jeans but the protection is worth it.

Knee armor does not shift around at all, zippers are decent, mesh liner dries quick.

I always wear a liner (Underarmour) underneath the pants.

Already had my knee screwed up from my jeans just disintegrating on the road. So I will always wear something over my pants. Right now, it's a pair of TourMaster Flex pants with all the layers on/in. As it warms up in the mornings, the inner linings will be taken out and eventually the outer panel as well.

Okay, i decided to take the plunge and ordered a pair of AGV Sport Willow perforated pants... full-on leather track-type pants, not textile. They just arrived and first impressions are very good.

The perfs are extensive and large enough that it really looks like they'll flow some air. Nice leather, nice fit and finish, and they appear to fit well right out of the box. Very good armor that appears to be well placed and isn't going to go anywhere.

No way can these be used as overpants. My plan for commuting is to wear wicking long johns under them and change into pants when I get to the office. I'll either put pants in my bag every day or just leave a pair of jeans in my desk and swap them out weekly.

Since I'm a guy I can get away with stuff like that....

I've been using solid textiles (not the Rockets… some Fieldsheers IIRC) for years. I just got the Willow perforated pants and have yet to ride with them.

Pros for textile overpants:

- You can wear them over street clothes.
- Pockets tend to be usable (mine have thigh pockets I can get to while on the bike)
- Can wear them in wet weather
- Often come with a removable liner for even more temperature flexibility

Cons for textile:

- Very bulky
- Loose fit. That means the armor will move around in a crash
- Don't fit into the top of your boots that well, assuming you wear boots
- Hot in the summer (I also tried some mesh pants to stay cooler but they are NOT confidence inspiring… almost seems like there's no point)

Pros for perforated leather:

- Nice snug fit, will keep armor in place
- Better armor (really good shin guards)
- Protection doesn't get any better
- Could be cooler than textile because of perforations (the perforations on the Willows are larger and more numerous than i thought they'd be)

Cons for perforated leather:

- You have to go buy riding boots (a good idea anyway)
- Can't wear over street clothes so you either get creative or resign yourself to wearing them off the bike
- Wet roads to be avoided (same with any leather gear)
- No accessible pockets (why anyone puts front pockets on track pants is beyond me… they're useless)
- Dork/poser factor of having pucks on the street (yes you can take them off but the fuzzy velcro won't last long… and covers seem to be next to impossible to find)

Yeah, they're cheap Cycle Gear stuff, but still way better than work boots. More supportive, more protection. They're also nice and cool in the summer. I'd probably upgrade if I were going to go out on the track.

Just for reference, I am able to tuck my bulky textile pants in there without much trouble, though I do have to take care to fold/wrap the cuffs around my calves correctly to avoid pressure points. With the Willows or any track-style leather pants that's not a concern, obviously... they're designed to fit inside the boot.

The important thing, IMHO, is that the calf can expand a bit if you're going to try to tuck bulky pants into them. My boots have a zipper that comes up just above the ankle. The upper part of the boot is held shut by velcro, so it can be made larger to accommodate tucked-in pants. I think this is the case with most street boots, though i see those Tourmasters have longer zippers.

Bottom line is that with track-type pants I think you'll be fine. With textiles and those boots, it might be a challenge especially if you've got thick calves.

I guess being a comfortable poser is better than being super hot in over pants all summer.

You won't look like a poser in leathers. You will look like a smart rider. Don't worry about virgin knee pucks. You shouldn't be dragging knees on the streets. Mine only touch at the track and not very often.

Just wore the Willows for the first time on this morning's commute.

Underneath were my regular underwear and a pair of heavyweight long underwear.

Temps in the mid-high 40s and I was very comfortable. With the right lightweight stuff underneath it probably won't be too bad in the summer, but time will tell. I want to avoid wearing them without some sort of separate liner. The could get REALLY gross over the long term if I let the pants lining contact my skin.

The pants are pre-curved so very, very comfortable on the bike. They do feel (and look) a bit awkward when I'm walking around, but who cares?

Took only a minute or two to grab my jeans and belt and hit the mens room to change. A good purchase, I think, and a workable commuting strategy.

I'm not. just look at the people you see on the street.

ATGATT is rare around here. A lot of people do wear helmets and jackets, but I rarely see boots or pants. Jeans and sneakers are the dress code.

When I first purchased my bike I got a helmet, leather riding jacket, leather gloves, and "short" style riding boots and wore only jeans.

A couple weeks or so after I had the bike I high-sided into a, luckily grassy, ditch due to taking a turn that was sharper than I expected at a speed not appropriate for my experience.

I walked away with no major injuries but remember looking at my palms and seeing a good portion of leather that had rubbed off on my right-hand glove. I very quickly realized the value of wearing proper gear.

I also distinctly remember my right knee being quite sore, and again, thought how lucky I was that I didn't slide across pavement... I needed to get proper pants.

I wanted to get leather pants but didn't quite have it in the budget, but at the same time did not want to spend money on textile pants since I would rather just save that money towards leathers.

Instead I decided to at least pickup some knee/shin armor to put under or over my pants. I found these relatively inexpensive Fox Racing Titan Race Knee Guards that I wore under my pants that were super comfy and definitely added a noticeable feel in safety.

I still had leather pants on my mind, but I was also looking to get a one piece or two piece leather suit because I was really interested in going to a track day in the near future.

So I ended up coming across a good deal on a A* trigger one piece suit which is what I am wearing now at all time when I ride. Pretty much a night and day difference. I also had to upgrade to full-length boots so they would zip over my suit and have an A* bionic back protector on the way.

My suit is red/white/black and has the sliders on the knee. Do I look like a "poser" on the streets? I don't know, and quite frankly I couldn't care less. I am not wearing my gear to impress people; I am wearing my gear for added safety and visibility. I see the knee pucks as added protection in the event I should ever go down.

I would much rather go down, total my bike, trash my gear, and walk away from it than wake up in an emergency room with missing skin, broken bones, an enormous hospital bill, and god forbid months/years of rehabilitation.

Sweet, thanks for your thoughts on them. I went ahead and ordered a pair. I dont really want over pants and these look like they will offer more protection. I am going to hold off riding my bike again until I get them, I have been riding around with jeans the last few days and after seeing some pictures of road rash I don't plan on doing that anymore.

I've had a half dozen textile or mesh riding pants. My favorites by far are the Fieldsheer Titanium Air Mesh pants. They flow incredibly well and the liner, which is very warm and comfortable, really makes these a 3 season pant. With the liner out it feels like the pants flow more air than my Joe Rocket Phoenix pants, which is strange because you can see your boxers or whatever underneath the Rockets. While I don't expect the mesh to hold up well in a slide, the Fieldsheers have a few layers of different stuff.

Also, the Fieldsheers are SUPER comfortable. They only make women's ones now (in the mail for my wife) but you can find some on ebay for just over $100 (retail was almost $200).

I have the Icon Overlord texties for commuting (1 mile each way) and the AGV Willow perf leathers for out of town rides. I like their construction but the leather is clearly not quite as good quality as my revit jacket. Good and worth the price, but not top quality.

looks like everyone is going for the willow pants? Cany anyone suggest a pair of possibly overpants? Normal work communite is mon-fri in khaki's or dress pants (jeans on friday). So those will get destroyed - i usually carry a backpack with me but would rather not redress at work. Textile melts to your skin doent it? VS mesh and its breathability vs leather and its protection? I am know quite sure of what to choose reading this entire thread. was looking for an affordable budget but it looks like everything is 150-200$ +. My boots are A* SMX+ vented.

Have had them for several years, never crashed tested, but many testimonials on his web site have (try that with most manufacturers). They are great here in Texas heat. They're tailor made to your measurements. I don't use them as overpant generally but have done that as well. They are phenomenal here in the summer.

Gear can be expensive, but leaving skin and bones ground into the pavement costs much more.

Just tried out the AGV Willow pants today. I like them a lot! At first I kind of felt like a dumbass wearing them but you get use to it pretty fast haha.

Felt much better riding with riding pants on. I was always kind of uncomfortable without them.

The weather is finally breaking here in the Northeast so I went for a 100 mile jaunt on Saturday.

I'm impressed with the Willows from a comfort standpoint. I can definitely feel the presence of the perfs on my thighs. This suggests that despite being leather, they should be cooler in summer than my non-perforated textile overpants. Also, since they're track pants they're pre-cut to be comfortable on the bike.

They don't come up as high in the back as my textiles, so it looks like I'll probably wind up actually using the pants-to-jacket zip. Spent an hour or two Sunday doing some tailoring... sewing the correct zipper into the jacket. Why the heck don't they just standardize these things, anyway? Sheesh.

How do you like them so far? You ride a lot in them yet? Can you provide a mini review if possible, + temps you drove in so far.

Anyone use these before, they seem decent. Spidi Superstorm H2OUT Overpants Never really heard of Spidi before, anyone use their products? Actually those might not work - they do not have a small.

STG has A* Express Drystar and Oxygen Air Overpants, Icon: Anthem Mesh, Brawnson Textile, Hooligan 2 Mesh, Overlord Textile, and their Compound Leather and Textile. I am sure they can order other products but if you search Overpants those are all the ones that they have instock (different colors). The A*'s seem like the only decent ones and its probably because of their name. The Mesh seem pointless like @adouglas mentioned and textile melts to your skin and is hot in summer correct? Not sure what to pick. I like going to STG cause they are local and i can drive up to the warehouse.

I actually just wore them for the first time today on my commute to work.

On the Way to Work

I wore them with the thermal liner in, over my jeans and belt. It was a snug fit, not uncomfortable though. It was around 50 degrees F this morning and I was plenty warm for my 25 minute commute.

On the Way Home from Work

I took out the thermal liner and wore the riding pants only, no jeans underneath. The pants fit comfortably, as if I were wearing any other pair of jeans/pants. I was plenty cool for the commute home, around 75 degrees F now.

Overall

I am not sure if I will continue to wear as over-pants, I may just change at work. I think the pants are a little to snug over jeans for day in and day out over-pants, I had to re-tuck in my shirt and everything anyway when I got to work, so why not just change.

The knee armor is not adjustable, to my knowledge, and falls right into place while sitting on the bike. Who knows where it will go or if it will stay in place in the event of a spill.

This is my first pair of pants so I don't have anything to compare them to. So far I am happy and will be able to tell you more after I use them more.

I find them to be even more comfortable when zipped to my jacket. Add a pair of free flowing under-pant liners and the perforation will be even more apparent.

I'm looking for a pair of riding pants, but don't have a clue what to get. I think some type of over pants because we usually end up going somewhere that regular riding pants would be uncomfortable. I also want something that is going to be protective in case I go down. I'm not sure what to get - actually completely confused would be a more appropriate statement. I don't ride a lot in the extreme cold; more summer riding. Any suggestions??

Oh wait! You meant what I wear when on a motorcycle. Sorry for the misunderstanding. When I ride I wear some nice Tourmaster mesh pants with built in armor.

the fabric prevents abrasion but not impact damage.
