2009 Ninja 250R: Need help identifying this part
Hi fellow members/riders,
I've been lurking on this forum for a bit for a couple years and had always been able to find the information I was looking for somewhere online. But finally, I have a question of my own and hope you guys can help me out. I just started to get hands on and start doing basic service on the bike, so please forgive me if this turns out to be a silly question. Today, I noticed between the knee panel fairing and the foot peg on the rear brake side, there is loose panel underneath with a missing screw. I removed the fairing, to find a piece of panel just hanging inside with all three missing screws... Removal of that hanging piece revealed the following which I have no idea what it is... I checked all diagrams on kawasakipartshouse and could not find this part. Is this something serious that I should take care of asap? I will replace the screw either way but it has been like this since the past thousand miles after I got the bike used. I was hoping it would be the same screw on the fairing but it will not fit. Greatly appreciates your help!! |

That is the air filter/cleaner cover. What you are looking at is the air filter. The missing screws are for that cover, and I would definitely get them replaces as air may be sneaking in and bypassing the filter. Not good.
Part diagram says they are 6mmX10 screws. PN is 92172-0005. Here is diagram: http://www.partzilla.com/parts/searc...NER/parts.html |

Thank you so much for the quick reply!
Ahh... the air filter. How could I have missed that?! For # 92172 there is two part: 92172-0005 - screw 92172-0296 - screw, tapping I'm guessing the tapping is like a washer type of thing? I'll need to get both? |

I think you will only need the 0005.

The screw is similar to one that screw the seat. I'd unscrew that and find similar stainless steel screw at local hardware store. It should be cheaper than OEM.

Ya, any 6X10 screw should work. Just make sure it isn't longer. The side cover screws are 6x14, which means they are longer. So don't get the same size as the side covers.

I just swapped out my air filter yesterday. All you need is the screws to keep the air box cover secure.
If you are looking to clean/change your air filter, I would recommend the following: http://www.ebay.com/itm/K-N-KA-2508-...826c69&vxp=mtr These filters are much better than the stock air filter that you have in there. They provide much better air flow and performance. If you need help installing it, watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaGndC1s5wU |

Thanks for all the advice guys.
I bought some machinery screws from Lowes today, tried finding the closing looking screw by eye. Ended up getting the same exact size as the one on the side cover, which only went in on the first round of thread. It felt too big and I didn't want to force anymore in. Will try again on my next visit or just order from partzilla to save some time and trouble. I also cleaned out the air filter but might need to do it again cause I was in a rush and the filter still look kinda black. But after it dries, for re-oiling, can I use rotella t6 full synthetic 5w-40? or will I need something regular with 10w-40? |

Thanks Alex, I will try that.
Sorry for being a complete idiot here. So is full synthetic 5w-40 safe for oiling the filter? |

I'll be sure to measure it precisely.
Thanks for the link, though I did read through it already, it only mentions the use of 10w-40. I only have the 5w-40 synthetic atm. |
