Thumbs up Issues with bike sputtering

Hi all i just recently picked up a used 250 ninja 2009, i did a fresh oil change on the bike around 500km ago and had no issues as well as the oil filter, this was the tank of gas that came with the bank just over half full. Now i put in fresh gas rode the bike home parked it over night and i come back in the morning to have the bike turn on and idle fine but the moment i put it into gear it wont go past 4k rpms without sputtering and trying to shut off. Same issue when in neutral 4krpms and wont go past that and sputters, any suggestions. Air filter was one of my guesses was fairly dirty so cleaned that out and now its sitting over night drying im assuming its a carb issue but was wondering if anyone else had the same issues. tia

It may have crap in the little inline filter. If you used up old gas, then fresh gas in could have broken stuff loose. It would cut down the flow for the carbs at high rpm.

Check that first, then try draining the tank into a gas can through a filter of some kind and refilling a few time. Best to catch crap before it clogs the carbs.

Hi Jordyn! Welcome to Ninjette!

What's history of this bike?
How long had it been sitting around before you bought it?
Might need a thorough carb restoration.

Bike used to be used as a commuter bike it has around 18k miles!
It sat for one season as the guy who owned it upgraded to a bigger bike. And thats what i was thinking as well.

Anything more than 3 or 4 months of gas in the carbs is going to cause problems. You may be looking at a carb cleaning. I would add a filter to your fuel line as well. (I did) also get in the habit of draining carbs and using stabilizer for the winter. Or do what is even better, ride all year.

If not treated, the gas will eventually go bad - full tank or not. Gas with ethanol goes bad quicker.

The real problem is the gas sitting in the floatbowl. Even with stabilizer it still can evaporate, leaving varnish deposits that will plug the jets.

Always best to drain the floatbowls for long term storage IMO. I do it on everything I store (mowers, snowblowers, trimmers) and they always fire right up with fresh gas.

If something has a steel tank I store it with stabilizer and a full tank to prevent rust. I will also add a few ounces of 2-stroke oil as well.

If it has a plastic tank I drain it completely.

Also - it may not run 100% with the first tank of fuel from storage, so don't rush to make changes until you have run thorough that tank. On the first fresh tank each season I add 1oz per gal of Techron Concentrate to clean the fuel system, intake valves, and combustion chamber of deposits. I also run it in all my vehicles each year after winter.

You should also check the seal on the gas cap. I did a write up on my experience with my 2011 and the issues with the seal. It sounds a lot like what happened to mine, even on full choke I couldn't get it to go past 3.5-4k.

My post is titled "update on new "oem" gas cap"
I basically did every bit of maintenance on this bike with nothing working, if I had taken it to a shop I'd be in nearly $1,000.

If it isn't the issue then I'd look at the pilot jets and clean them
After that it just kinda piles on needing more supplies to get more of the work done.

I went through exactly that today. After draining the carbs and tank, I came away with a bike that runs well and over four onces of water. So it may well just be water in the system.

Luck,

J~
